Burgundy is quite simply one of the most famous wine regions in the world. Producing some of the rarest and most sought-after wines by enthusiasts, such as the renowned Grand Cru Romanée-Conti, the region is renowned for its thousand-year-old winemaking history, its iconic grape varieties, its prestigious appellations, its exceptional terroirs and of course, its wines of the highest quality.Let’s take a quick overview of all these exceptional features.
The dominant grape varieties in Burgundy are Pinot Noir for red wines as well as Chardonnay for white wines. Pinot Noir produces elegant red wines, complex, low in tannins and often described as having remarkable finesse and aromatic intensity.Chardonnay, on the other hand, produces delicious white wines that can develop fresh and mineral aromas, as is the case in Chablis, but can also display more roundness, richness, and indulgence when aged in barrels, as is often the case with appellations such as Meursault or Pouilly-Fuissé.
Other minority grape varieties nevertheless exist within the region. We can notably mention Aligoté, whose main appellation is Bouzeron, Gamay, often grown on the granitic soils of the Mâconnais and which can be used in the production of Crémants de Bourgogne as well as the red wines of the AOC Coteaux Bourguignons, or even Pinot Gris (locally called Pinot Beurot), a rare grape variety in the region but, for example, used by Domaine Thevenot Le-Brun.
The Burgundy region has numerous appellations spread across several sub-regions : Chablis and Yonne, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, as well as the Mâconnais. The most prestigious among them are located within the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. For example, we can mention the very famous Chambolle-Musigny (Decelle & Fils estate), Nuits-Saint-Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet (Alain Chavy estate) or even Chassagne-Montrachet (Au Pied du Mont Chauve estate).
Nevertheless, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais are also brimming with hidden gems, often at more affordable prices, such as the superb appellations Mercurey (François Raquillet estate), Givry (Cellier aux Moines estate), Rully (Jaeger-Defaix estate), Montagny, Saint-Véran (Bodillard Vineyards), Viré-Clessé and also Pouilly-Fumé (Cheveau estate).
Burgundy is also internationally renowned for its unique wine classification system, which very precisely defines plots (called "climats") with unique terroir.
Thus, within the Burgundy vineyard, only 33 plots (1% of production) are classified as Grand Cru and 662 as Premier Cru (10% of production), highlighting the best soils and exposures, allowing the production of some of the very best wines in the region.
For example, among the Grands Crus are Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Bressandes (Domaine Jacques Prieur), Clos de Vougeot and also Mazis-Chambertin (Domaine Philippe Naddef). On the Premier Cru side, certain names such as Les Charmes (Domaine Michelot), Les Naugues, Clos du Chapitre or even Les Champeaux generally produce excellent wines.
In conclusion, Burgundy is an exceptional wine region and its wines are among the finest and most elegant in the world. Its unique terroirs, thanks to their soils, microclimates, and exposures, showcase Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and highlight prestigious appellations that are now celebrated across the globe.
