Languedoc-Roussillon : a land of diversity

With its 250 000 hectares, Languedoc-Roussillon is the largest wine region in France and one of the most diverse in the country. Benefiting from a Mediterranean climatehighly varied soils as well as an ancient winemaking tradition, it offers an incredible wealth of grape varieties, appellations, and wine styles, sure to delight enthusiasts from around the world. Let’s take a brief look at all its characteristics.

The grape varieties of Languedoc

The grape varieties grown in Languedoc-Roussillon are numerous. The region mainly produces red wines (75% of the vineyard) and around fifty varieties of this type are represented. Among these, you will notably find the Syrah, GrenacheCarignan and Merlot. Nevertheless, many other grape varieties are present, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, CinsaultMourvèdre and also Cabernet Franc. All these varieties are also used to create delicious  rosé wines, most of which are focused on enjoyment.

Although they are in the minority, the white grape varieties offer some truly excellent wines with diverse profiles. The most widely planted variety in the region is Chardonnay but you will also find SauvignonMuscatViognierGrenache Blanc and Grenache Gris, Maccabeu, Vermentino as well as Roussanne and Marsanne.

The appellations of Languedoc

The Languedoc-Roussillon region boasts many renowned wine appellations.Among the most famous, we can mention Pic-Saint-Loup where the estate La Chouette du Chai produces magnificent cuvées and creates great wines for aging, as well as the Côtes-du-Roussillon (Domaine des Schistes) as well as the Minervois AOC (Domaine de Courbissac). The Languedoc, Saint-Chinian, Fitou, Corbières AOCs, and also Muscat de Rivesaltes are also renowned for their excellent wine production.

IGPs are also very prominent in the region and actually account for nearly 80% of local production ! Thus, the Pays d’Oc IGP, Côtes Catalanes (Château de L’Ou), Cévennes (Domaine Perdrix-Lasouche) or Hérault are capable of producing wines to share with friends as well as powerful wines with magnificent aging potential.

Types of wines and terroirs

The wines produced in Languedoc-Roussillon are extremely diverse. Thus, in addition to the classic reds and whites, the region is also known for its Natural Sweet Wines, such as Banyuls and Maury, produced from late-harvested grapes and fortified. These sweet wines offer an exceptional concentration of flavors and complexity, exemplified by those crafted by Mas Amiel, an absolute reference in the field. More rarely, remarkable orange wines are also produced. Finally, refreshing sparkling wines are also made, such as the Blanquette de Limoux.

From a terroir perspective, Languedoc-Roussillon is a true  geological millefeuille. From the Mediterranean coastline to the Pyrenean mountains, passing through plains and hills, each sub-region has its own microclimate and specific soil types, giving the wines a great diversity of aromas, flavors, and structures. In the north, the soils are rich in schist, limestone, and sandstone. The river valleys of the Hérault department offer alluvial soils, while the coastal terroirs are marked by the influence of the Mediterranean Sea, with clay-limestone and sandy soils.

In conclusion, the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region is a true French wine treasure.
