Burgundy Grands Crus
Burgundy is one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world. Renowned for producing some of the finest and most delicate wines available, the region is often considered the birthplace of terroir wines, where each vineyard plot has its own unique character.
Indeed, the concept of Grand Cru here is not the same as in Bordeaux or Champagne, where it refers respectively to an estate or an entire village. Here, the Grands Crus are very small vineyard plots, only a few hectares in size (even just a few ares for winegrower-owners), planted with white (Chardonnay) or red (Pinot Noir) grapes, and representing the elite of the region's terroirs.
The Burgundy Wine Classification
The Burgundy wine classification is based on the concept of Crus, categorizing vineyard plots (here called "Climats") according to the quality of their terroir (soils, exposure, etc.).
The top of the hierarchy is thus represented by 33 Grands Crus, appellations/plots considered to allow the production of the most prestigious Burgundy wines, whether they are red and therefore made from
Pinot Noir or white and thus produced from Chardonnay. It should be noted that these Grands Crus of Burgundy are found exclusively in the vineyards of Chablis as well as those of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. In fact, to date, there are no Grands Crus, whether white or red, in the Côte Chalonnaise or the Mâconnais.
It is also important to emphasize that the Grands Crus are appellations in their own right. Thus, Corton-Charlemagne, Montrachet, and Clos de Vougeot are AOCs on their own.
Prestigious Names
Beyond the iconic and unshakeable Romanée-Conti, other Grands Crus are also highly renowned. For example, we can mention Corton, Corton-Charlemagne and Corton-Bressandes (Domaine Jacques Prieur), Mazis-Chambertin (Domaine Philippe Naddef), Clos de Vougeot, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Bonnes Mares, Clos des Lambrays, Grand Échezeaux, and also Bâtard-Montrachet.
These vineyards are renowned for their unique terroir, clay-limestone soils, and ideal exposure. Wines from these Grands Crus are deep, complex, and possess excellent aging potential.
