The magic of the Great Wines of Burgundy
Burgundy is simply one of the most famous wine regions in the world. Producing some of the rarest and most sought-after wines by enthusiasts, like the famous Grand Cru Romanée-Conti, the region is renowned for its millennia-old winemaking history, its emblematic grape varieties, its prestigious appellations, its exceptional terroirs as well as, of course, its very high-quality wines. Let's take a quick overview of all these exceptional characteristics.
The grape varieties of Burgundy
The dominant grape varieties in Burgundy are the Pinot Noir for red wines as well as the Chardonnay for white wines. The Pinot Noir produces elegant red wines, complex, low in tannins and often described as having remarkable finesse and aromatic intensity. The Chardonnay, on the other hand, produces delicious white wines that can develop on fresh and mineral aromas as is the case in Chablis, but can also present more roundness, richness and indulgence when aged in barrels as is often the case in appellations like Meursault or Pouilly-Fuissé.
Other minority varieties nevertheless exist within the region. We can notably mention Aligoté, whose main appellation is Bouzeron, Gamay, often cultivated on the granitic soils of the Mâconnais and can be part of the composition of Crémants de Bourgogne as well as the red wines of the AOC Coteaux Bourguignons, or even Pinot Gris (locally called Pinot Beurot), a rare grape variety in the region but used, for example, by domaine Thevenot Le-Brun.
The appellations of Burgundy
The Burgundy region has numerous appellations spread across several sub-regions : Chablisien and Yonne, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais . The most prestigious of these are located within Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. For example, we can mention the very famous Chambolle-Musigny (domaine Decelle & Fils), Nuits-Saint-Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet (domaine Alain Chavy) or also Chassagne-Montrachet (domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve).
Nevertheless, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais are also full of gems, often at more affordable prices, such as the superb appellations Mercurey (domaine François Raquillet), Givry (domaine du Cellier aux Moines), Rully (domaine Jaeger-Defaix), Montagny, Saint-Véran (Vignobles Bodillard), Viré-Clessé or even Pouilly-Fumé (domaine Cheveau).
Premier Cru and Grand Cru
Burgundy is also internationally renowned for its unique wine classification system, which very precisely delineates plots (called « climats ») with unique terroir.
Thus, within the Burgundy vineyard, only33 plots (1% of the production) are classified as Grand Cru and 662 as Premier Cru (10% of the production), highlighting the best soils and exposures, allowing for the production of some of the very best wines in the region.
For example, one can mention the Grands Crus Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Bressandes (domaine Jacques Prieur), Clos de Vougeot or even Mazis-Chambertin (domaine Philippe Naddef). On the Premier Cru side, certain names like Les Charmes (domaine Michelot), Les Naugues, Clos du Chapitre or even Les Champeaux generally produce excellent wines.
In conclusion, Burgundy is an exceptional wine region and its wines are among the finest and most elegant in the world. Its unique terroirs, due to their soils, microclimates, and exposures, highlight Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and showcase prestigious appellations now valued across the globe.
