The Grands Crus of Burgundy

Burgundy is one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world. Renowned for producing some of the finest and most delicate wines that exist, the region is indeed often considered the birthplace of terroir wines, where each vineyard plot has its uniqueness.

Indeed, the notion of Grand Cru here is not the same as in Bordeaux or Champagne, where it refers to a château and an entire village, respectively. Here, the Grands Crus are very small plots of vineyards, only a few hectares (even a few ares for owner-winemakers), planted in white (Chardonnay) or red (Pinot noir) and representing the elite of regional terroirs.

The Burgundy wine classification

The Burgundy wine classification is based on the notion of Crus, categorizing the plots of vineyards (here called "Climats") according to the quality of their terroir (soils, exposures, etc.).

The top of the hierarchy is thus represented by 33 Grands Crus, appellations/plots considered to allow the production of the most prestigious wines of Burgundy, whether they are red and therefore based on Pinot noir or white and therefore made from Chardonnay. It should be noted that these Grands Crus of Burgundy are exclusively concentrated on the vineyards of Chablis as well as those of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. Indeed, to date, there is no Grand Cru, whether white or red, within the Côte Chalonnaise or the Mâconnais.

It is also important to emphasize that the Grands Crus are appellations in their own right. Thus, Corton-Charlemagne, Montrachet, or Clos de Vougeot are AOCs in themselves.

Prestigious names

Beyond the iconic and unshakeable Romanée-Conti, other Grands Crus are also very renowned. For example, we can mention CortonCorton-Charlemagne and Corton-Bressandes (Domaine Jacques Prieur), Mazis-Chambertin (Domaine Philippe Naddef), Clos de Vougeot, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Bonnes Mares, Clos des Lambrays, Grand Échezeaux or even Bâtard-Montrachet.

These vineyards are renowned for their unique terroir, their clay-limestone soils, and their ideal exposure. The wines from these Grands Crus are deep, complex, and have a long aging potential.
