The Southwest and its wines

The Southwest is a true treasure for wine lovers. With its 55 000 hectares, the region indeed showcases an impressive diversity of grape varieties, appellations, and terroirs, offering a rich and captivating wine experience. From Bergerac to the Pyrenees via Gascony, embark on a journey full of emotions.

The grape varieties and appellations of the Southwest

The grape varieties present in the Southwest are as varied as the region itself. Among the most commonly used red varieties, we find Malbec, also known as Côt, which produces powerful red wines rich in tannins. Nevertheless, some regions vinify it with softness and elegance like Château les Croisille in Cahors, an appellation where it reigns supreme and is sometimes accompanied by Merlot or Tannat .

The latter is also another emblematic grape variety of the region. Originally from Madiran, it produces full-bodied and tannic red wines suitable for very long aging. It is notably found in the AOC Irouléguy and Tursan.

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are also widely cultivated in the region, particularly within the AOC Bergerac, Montravel, and Pécharmant. Finally, the Southwest is full of other indigenous varieties such as Duras, Fer Servadou, and Négrette.

For white grape varieties, we find Colombard and Ugni blanc, often used to produce fresh and fruity white wines, ideal as an aperitif and notably produced within AOC Côtes-de-Gascogne.

The Gros and Petit Manseng varieties are also well established. These are very aromatic, giving rise to white wines ranging from dry to sweet and exuding complex aromas of exotic fruits, honey, and flowers. The AOC Jurançon or Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh (see Château Montus by Alain Brumont) beautifully illustrate their capabilities. Finally, other grapes are also present in the region such as Chardonnay, Mauzac (Maison Antech in Limoux), and the native Courbu. SauvignonSémillon and Muscadelle are also present as in the AOC Monbazillac.

The South-West terroirs of France

The South-West region, being the largest in France in terms of territorial coverage, is logically very diverse when it comes to terroirs. Thus, we find clay-limestone, gravelly, or even sandy soils. The oceanic and Mediterranean climates meet within the region, offering ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The river valleys, sunny hillsides, and the influences of the surrounding mountains also contribute to the complexity of the wines.

In conclusion, the Southwest is a fascinating destination for wine enthusiasts seeking unique discoveries. With its diversity of grape varieties, types of wines, appellations, and terroirs, the region offers a very varied taste palette. Thus, whether you are attracted by the powerful red wines of Madiran, the sweet and aromatic wines of Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, or the fresh and fruity white wines of Gaillac, you will find a multitude of gems to taste.
