Understanding the great wines of Burgundy

Burgundy is one of the most famous wine regions in the world. It produces some of the rarest and most sought-after wines among enthusiasts, such as the Grand Cru Romanée-Conti, and stands out for its thousand-year-old winemaking history, its iconic grape varieties, prestigious appellations, and the diversity of its terroirs.

This richness is based in particular on a very precise understanding of the sites, soils, exposures, and climates, which allows both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to express very different profiles depending on their origin.

Burgundy grape varieties

The dominant grape varieties in Burgundy are Pinot Noir for red wines and Chardonnay for white wines.

Pinot Noir generally produces elegant, complex, low-tannin red wines characterized by great aromatic finesse. Depending on the terroir and aging, it can reveal notes of red fruits, spices, undergrowth, or even more floral and mineral nuances.

Chardonnay offers a great diversity of styles. It can develop fresh and mineral expressions, as in Chablis, but can also show more roundness, richness, and generosity in certain appellations such as Meursault or Pouilly-Fuissé.

Other minority grape varieties are also present in the region. Notably, we can mention Aligoté, with Bouzeron being one of its flagship appellations, Gamay, or even Pinot Gris, locally called Pinot Beurot, used more discreetly by certain estates such as Domaine Thevenot Le-Brun.

Burgundy appellations

Burgundy has many appellations spread across several major areas: Chablis and Yonne, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais.

Among the most renowned appellations of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, you will find Chambolle-Musigny with the Domaine Decelle & Fils, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet, and also Chassagne-Montrachet.

The Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais also offer excellent opportunities, often at more accessible prices. Notable examples include Mercurey with the Château de Chamirey, Givry with the Domaine du Cellier aux Moines, Rully with the Domaine Jaeger-Defaix, Saint-Véran with the Vignobles Bodillard, Viré-Clessé with the Domaine des Gandines and also Pouilly-Fuissé with the Domaine Cheveau.

Premier Cru and Grand Cru

Burgundy is also known for its unique and particularly precise classification system, based on the concept of "climat", meaning a vineyard plot defined and identified by its terroir, exposure, and history.

The Burgundy vineyard includes 33 Grand Cru appellations and several hundred climats classified as Premier Cru. These classification levels correspond to the terroirs considered the most prestigious in the region and represent a limited share of total production.

Among the most famous Grands Crus are Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Bressandes, and Clos de Vougeot with the Domaine Jacques Prieur.

On the Premier Cru side, climates such as Les Charmes, Les Enseignères, Clos du Chapitre, and Les Champeaux illustrate the full diversity of Burgundy's terroirs.

Burgundy thus stands out for a mosaic of terroirs where soils, microclimates, exposures, and expertise allow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to reveal very different expressions from one appellation, village, and sometimes even one plot to another.
