A wine for every aperitif

To choose your wine, start by considering the dishes that will accompany it. A few oysters, a charcuterie board, or cheese pastries each call for different pairings. With delicate dishes, opt for freshness and finesse. Richer recipes, on the other hand, can be paired with a more generous bottle.

The role of the aperitif in the evening also matters. Before a meal, a dry white, a chilled rosé, or a light-bodied red wine allows for a gentle start. If you are planning a dinner-style aperitif, you can offer a wider variety of styles, depending on the dishes that will replace dinner.

Sparkling wines for the aperitif

An elegant Champagne, a Crémant, or a Prosecco pairs beautifully with gougères, puff pastries, and cheese bites. The freshness of sparkling wines perfectly balances these generous appetizers, while the bubbles pleasantly extend the tasting experience. With oysters or simply prepared shellfish, opt for a lively, low-dosage cuvée.

Among sparkling wines, the dosage is also a useful indicator. A brut or extra-brut will generally be better suited to savory appetizers, while a demi-sec will offer a more noticeable sweetness.

For a change of pace, you can also opt for a Crémant from Alsace or Burgundy, or sparkling wines from the Loire produced in Vouvray and Montlouis-sur-Loire. These appellations indeed offer interesting alternatives, with aromatic expressions and more affordable prices than champagne.

White wines for the aperitif

With shrimp, fish rillettes, or goat cheese toasts, a dry and lively white is often a great choice. Sauvignon from the Loire region, for example, reveals citrus notes, while blends based on Colombard and Ugni Blanc from Côtes de Gascogne can offer more exotic aromas. In Alsace, the Riesling combines beautiful aromatic intensity with a very pleasant freshness.

To pair with mushroom puff pastries, poultry terrine, or creamy bites, wines with more roundness will be needed. Some Chardonnay from Burgundy and Chenin from the Loire offer exactly this more generous texture.

Prefer a touch of sweetness? A mellow or semi-dry white can accompany foie gras, blue cheese, or certain spicy dishes. Discover these different styles in our selection of white wines for aperitif.

Rosés for aperitif

With tapas, a vegetable tart, or tomato toasts, rosé brings pleasant fruitiness and a welcome freshness. Provence wines in particular offer delicate cuvées, with citrus and red berry notes. For spicier dishes or grilled vegetables, a rosé with more body, such as a Bandol, may be preferable.

Also, keep in mind that a very pale rosé is not necessarily lighter or less sweet than another. Instead, look for information about its freshness, roundness, and aromas to find the style you enjoy. And even though rosé is often associated with summer evenings, it can just as easily be served as an aperitif in any season!

Red wines for the aperitif

To pair with cured sausage, terrine, or ham, it’s best to choose a fruity red with soft tannins. A Gamay from Beaujolais, some Pinot Noirs from Burgundy or Alsace, and Cabernet Francs from the Loire valley are all great matches for this type of pairing.Their fruitiness and freshness allow the flavors of the charcuterie to shine.

With mini-burgers, skewers, or meat-based bites, you can opt for a more generous red. A Merlot, a blend based on Grenache or a Syrah from the Rhône valley will bring more presence. However, these grape varieties produce very different wines: for an aperitif, it’s best to avoid a structure that’s too firm if the sides remain light.

A smooth red can also pair well with Tomme or Comté cheese. On the other hand, a very creamy or strong cheese may sometimes pair better with a white. Our selection of fruity red wines will allow you to compare several profiles depending on your platter.

Our tips for serving your wine perfectly at the aperitif

Match your choice to the variety of appetizers

If your table features both seafood dishes and charcuterie, offering a dry white and a smooth red will better complement both. Your guests will also be able to choose according to their preferences. For a few appetizers of the same style, a single bottle is enough: there’s no need to open several bottles.

Find the right serving temperature

Serve light whites, rosés, and sparkling wines at around 8 to 10°C. A more generous white will benefit from warming slightly in the glass to reveal its aromas. For smooth, light, and fruity reds, a temperature of 14 to 16°C is a good guideline. Avoid serving them chilled, as the cold can harden the sensation of the tannins, and a red served too warm may seem more alcoholic and lose its balance.

Think about the meal to follow

If the aperitif comes before dinner, consider the bottles planned for the table. After a sweet wine, a dry white may seem more acidic. Similarly, a powerful red could overshadow a delicate cuvée served afterwards. Starting with the freshest and least intense styles generally ensures a pleasant progression.

Wines for every taste and budget

For a spontaneous aperitif, an affordable and well-chosen bottle can offer plenty of enjoyment. A white from Gascony, a Beaujolais, or a rosé with IGP pairs nicely with simple dishes. For a reception or a special occasion, you may wish to allocate a larger budget to a vintage whose finesse or complexity you appreciate.

However, price and reputation do not guarantee a perfect pairing. A well-known appellation or the name of a château does not replace choosing a style that matches what you are serving. Likewise, an AOC or IGP indicates the origin and production rules, but does not guarantee that a bottle will suit your tastes.

If the cultivation method is one of your criteria, also explore our organic wines. You can then refine your selection by color, region, and the pairings you are looking for.
