AOC Patrimonio

Located in the north of Corsica, the Patrimonio AOC covers approximately 450 hectares of vineyards. Created in 1968, it is the first appellation of the Isle of Beauty to have been officially recognized. The Niellucciu grape variety is predominant here, and may be complemented by the Sciacarellu and Grenache noir varieties. For whites, Vermentino (or Rolle) is the only authorized variety. The wines of Patrimonio are today considered among the best in the entire Corsican, vineyard, whether red, white, or rosé.

History of the Patrimonio appellation

The Patrimonio appellation occupies a unique place in the Corsican wine landscape. If the vine has been cultivated on the island since Antiquity, with traces of viticulture dating back to the Greeks and Romans, the official recognition of Patrimonio as an AOC in 1968 marked a decisive turning point for the promotion of Corsican wines. At that time, several local producers decided to highlight the exceptional potential of the terroir located around the Gulf of Saint-Florent, combining ideal exposure, varied soils, and maritime influence to reveal the authentic character of the island's wines.

The Mediterranean climate, characterized by generous sunshine and sea breezes that temper the heat, allows the vineyard to produce red, white, and rosé wines of remarkable quality.Among them, the grape variety Niellucciu largely dominates local production, bringing to the reds of Patrimonio a beautiful structure, aromas of red fruits and spices, and a strong personality. Other indigenous and international grape varieties complement the vineyard (Sciacarellu, Grenache noir, etc.), contributing to the diversity and aromatic richness of the appellation.

Over the decades, many estates have refined their expertise, striving to produce more precise cuvées that are representative of their terroir. Some winemakers have thus naturally chosen to commit to organic or sustainable viticulture, in order to preserve the soils, thereby strengthening the identity of Patrimonio wines. These efforts have also enabled the appellation to establish itself as one of the major benchmarks of Corsican viticulture.

Today, Patrimonio remains a safe and iconic choice for lovers of Corsican wines. Thanks to the high standards of local estates and the richness of its terroirs, this AOC produces wines that fully express the mineral and Mediterranean character of the island. The cuvées of Patrimonio, whether red, rosé, or white, continue to appeal to those seeking authentic, powerful and balanced, wines with a strong identity and an inseparable link to the Corsican terroir.

The wines of the Patrimonio AOC

The wines of the Patrimonio appellation perfectly reflect the diversity of the Corsican vineyard. Located around the Gulf of Saint-Florent, this appellation benefits from a unique terroir combining limestone soils, maritime influences, and a Mediterranean climate. This combination allows each estate here to produce red, white, and rosé wines with a distinctive character, each expressing the local terroir in their own way.

The red wines thus represent the majority (75%) of the appellation's production. These are mainly made from the indigenous Niellucciu grape variety, an emblematic variety of the Corsican vineyard. This grape produces structured and elegant wines, characterized by a beautiful aromatic intensity. In their youth, Patrimonio reds reveal aromas of ripe black fruits, often accompanied by spicy notes (pepper, garrigue, etc.). With a few years of aging, these wines gain suppleness as well as complexity.

The white wines of the appellation also possess a strong identity.Products made exclusively from the Vermentino grape variety stand out for their balance between freshness and aromatic richness. These whites generally express notes of citrus, white flowers, and yellow-fleshed fruits, sometimes complemented by a slight saline touch reminiscent of the nearby maritime influence.

The rosés of Patrimonio also deserve the attention of enthusiasts. Fresh, indulgent and aromatic, they reveal notes of crisp red berries such as strawberry or redcurrant, supported by a beautiful saline tension on the palate. Some cuvées are particularly refined, with a very successful balance between fruit and freshness.

As in any great vineyard, the expression of Patrimonio wines may also vary depending on the vintage.Warm years generally produce more concentrated and powerful reds, while more temperate vintages highlight the finesse, freshness, and balance of the cuvées. This diversity contributes to the richness of the appellation and allows each estate to express, through its wines, a unique interpretation of the Corsican terroir.

Which dishes enhance a Patrimonio wine?

Corsican gastronomy naturally pairs with Patrimonio wines. Thanks to their Mediterranean character, wines from this appellation easily accompany many dishes, from traditional Corsican recipes to more modern cuisines.

Patrimonio red wines: perfect with characterful dishes

Patrimonio red wines, made mainly from the Niellucciu grape variety, have a beautiful structure and great aromatic richness. These red wines therefore pair perfectly with the generous specialties of Corsican gastronomy. Wild boar stew, roast lamb with maquis herbs or even artisanal charcuterie such as Coppa, Lonzu or Figatellu thus form particularly successful pairings. Patrimonio red wine will also excel with a grilled rib of beef, duck breast or a slow-cooked dish rich in flavor.

It is recommended to serve your Patrimonio red wine between 16 and 18°C. Depending on the vintage and the structure of the cuvée, decanting for 30 minutes to an hour can also help open up the aromas and bring more complexity to the tasting.

Patrimonio white wines: the perfect pairing with seafood

Patrimonio white wine, made from Vermentino, delights with its freshness and aromatic elegance.

The local white wines are therefore the ideal accompaniment for grilled fish, seafood, or scallop carpaccio. These white wines also pair very well with Brocciu, the island's iconic cheese, or with Mediterranean dishes made with grilled vegetables and olive oil.

In order to preserve all the aromatic finesse of the white wine from Patrimonio, a serving temperature between 10 and 12°C is recommended.

The rosé from Patrimonio: a convivial and indulgent

The rosé from Patrimonio is an excellent companion for summer meals. This lively, fruity, and indulgent wine will easily pair with a Mediterranean salad, grilled meats, grilled vegetables, or even light and sunny cuisine.

Served well chilled, between 8 and 10°C, it will be perfectly showcased and will offer you great tasting pleasure on hot days.

As you will have understood, the richness of the Patrimonio appellation lies in the diversity of its wines and the expression of its terroir. Each estate offers a unique expression of the Corsican vineyard. The opinions of enthusiasts and professionals regularly highlight the quality of these wines, often mentioned in specialized magazines (Hachette guide, Revue du Vin de France guide, etc.). Thus, whether you choose a structured red, an elegant white, or a rosé indulgent, Patrimonio wines will always find their place at the table and will allow you to create delicious and authentic food and wine pairings.

Storage of Patrimonio wines

Red wines from the Patrimonio appellation have an interesting aging potential reflecting in particular the structure of the Niellucciu grape variety. Depending on the style of the cuvée and the work of the estate, these wines can generally be kept for between five and fifteen years. The best wines, from an excellent vintage and a high-quality terroir, can even improve for longer in the cellar.

White wines from the appellation are generally best enjoyed in their youth to fully appreciate their freshness and aromatic expression. However, certain cuvées from old vines or particularly high-quality terroirs can evolve harmoniously over a few years, thereby developing greater complexity while retaining their liveliness.

Finally, the rosés of Patrimonio are intended to be enjoyed relatively young, when their fresh fruit aromas and liveliness are at their peak. Their style indulgent is particularly appreciated in the first years following bottling.

To best preserve the qualities of wines from the Patrimonio appellation, we recommend storing your bottles in a dark, well-ventilated cellar, protected from light and temperature fluctuations. A stable temperature around 12-14°C, combined with horizontal storage of the bottles to keep the cork moist, will allow your wine to age in optimal conditions.
