Originally from the province of Valencia in Spain where it is called Monastrell, it is believed to have arrived in France during the 16th century,  shortly after Grenache. It is still widely used today in the vineyards of Catalonia and Valencia. In France, it is present in many southern regions such as Provence (Côtes-de-Provence, Palette etc.), Languedoc-Roussillon (Terrasses du Larzac, Pic-Saint-Loup, Minervois etc.) and the southern Rhône Valley (Châteauneuf-du-Pape in particular).It is often used as a secondary grape variety to provide structure and strength to wines, but it also produces superb, racy, and intense cuvées when it takes the lead role. Its flagship appellation in France is Bandol, where it is the most used black grape variety for red and rosé wines.
