Mourvèdre

Originally from the province of Valencia in Spain, where it is called Monastrell, it is believed to have arrived in France during the 16th century,  shortly after Grenache. It is still widely used today in the vineyards of Catalonia and Valencia. In France, it is found in many southern regions such as Provence (Côtes-de-Provence, Palette, etc.), Languedoc-Roussillon (Terrasses du Larzac, Pic-Saint-Loup, Minervois, etc.) and the Southern Rhône Valley (Châteauneuf-du-Pape in particular).He is often used as a secondary grape variety to give structure and strength to wines, but he also produces superb, distinguished, and intense cuvées when taking center stage. Its flagship appellation in France is Bandol, where it is the most widely used black grape variety for red and rosé wines.
