Champagne: History and Birth of Effervescence

The style of a champagne depends in particular on its grape varieties, its origin, its blend, its aging, and its dosage.
The Chardonnay generally brings freshness, finesse, and tension, while the Pinot Noir contributes more to structure and body. The Pinot Meunier often offers more fruitiness and roundness.
A Blanc de Blancs Champagne is made from white grapes, most often Chardonnay. It is distinguished by its precision and elegance. Blancs de Noirs, made from Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier, generally offer more substance and vinosity. Rosé champagnes offer profiles ranging from delicate fruit to more structured and gastronomic cuvées.
Some producers also use, in a much more confidential way, grape varieties such as Arbane, Petit Meslier, Pinot Blanc, or Pinot Gris.
Dosage is added after disgorgement and plays an important role in the final balance of the champagne. It consists of adding a liqueur d’expédition made of wine and sugar.
A Brut Nature or Extra Brut contains very little added sugar and often offers a more pure and taut expression. Brut remains the most common style today and is suitable for many occasions.
However, dosage alone does not determine the style of a cuvée. The terroir, grape varieties, aging on lees, vintage, and the choices of the winemaker or the house also play an essential role.
The majority of champagnes are non-vintage and result from blending several years to maintain the house or winemaker’s style over time.
A vintage champagne is made mainly from grapes harvested in the same year, selected for its quality. These cuvées often benefit from longer aging in the bottle and can offer greater depth, complexity, and aging potential.
Some houses and estates also offer single-vineyard cuvées or champagnes from villages classified as Premier Cru or Grand Cru.
Champagne brings together several major winegrowing areas, each with its own unique characteristics.
-The Côte des Blancs is particularly renowned for its chalky soils and its champagnes made from Chardonnay. This is a benchmark region for Blanc de Blancs. Prestigious houses and winemakers such as Champagne Franck Bonville or Champagne Veuve Fourny produce precise and elegant cuvées here.
-The Montagne de Reims is strongly associated with Pinot Noir and champagnes that are often more structured. Pierre Paillard is one of the producers featured in our selection.
-The Vallée de la Marne gives significant importance to Pinot Meunier and produces many fruity and expressive champagnes. Baron Albert champagnes are a great example of this diversity.
-The Côte des Bar, located further south, is also closely associated with Pinot Noir, while the Côte de Sézanne stands out in particular for its significant presence of Chardonnay.
The style of a champagne also depends greatly on the philosophy of its producer. Some major houses seek a consistent signature from year to year, while many Champagne winegrowers focus more on highlighting the identity of a terroir, a village, or a specific plot. This diversity allows us to offer very different cuvées in their expression, their aging and their personality.
A bottle of champagne remains a wonderful gift idea and naturally accompanies special occasions. Brut, rosé, Blanc de Blancs or vintage cuvée: the choice will mainly depend on the recipient's preferences, the meal, and the budget.
For a reception or a large gathering, a magnum is also a particularly suitable option. Its large format creates a convivial atmosphere and allows several guests to enjoy the same cuvée.
All our cuvées listed as available are in stock and stored between 12 and 14°C, protected from light and vibrations.
You can order a single bottle of champagne, several bottles, a case, or certain champagnes in magnum. We offer both accessible cuvées and vintage champagnes, Blanc de Blancs, rosés, or Grand Cru cuvées.
Each order is carefully prepared in protective packaging before shipping. Several delivery options are available in France as well as to several European countries, to your home or to a pick-up point depending on the available options.
