Long renowned for its great Calvados, Château du Breuil opened in 2020 a new chapter in its history with the development of its range of French whisky.
Located in the heart of Pays d’Auge in Normandy, the Le Breuil distillery now relies on its extensive experience in the aging and maturation of spirits to craft whiskies of exceptional quality. Produced from strictly selected barley (notably Golden Promise) and distilled in pot stills, the spirits then benefit from particularly meticulous work on the oak casks and various finishes.
Through its range of French whiskies, Le Breuil highlights different expressions of whisky, single malt or otherwise, each crafted around precise work on barley, aging, and cask selection. While all the cuvées retain a common identity marked by elegance and balance, each reference nevertheless has its own character.
Le Breuil Golden Promise (Origin) is an excellent gateway into the world of the house's whiskies. This cuvée is made from Golden Promise, an old Scottish barley variety renowned in the single malt world for its aromatic richness and generous texture.
On the nose, this whisky generally reveals indulgent notes of fruit, malted cereals, vanilla, and sweet spices. On the palate, the whole offers a beautiful roundness and a balanced profile where the sweetness of the malt and the aromas from aging in oak barrels bring depth and complexity.
A particularly accessible expression that allows you to discover the Le Breuil Whisky style and its approach to French whisky.
With its Peated Single Malt, Le Breuil offers a more assertive and more intense interpretation of whisky. Here, the peat enriches the aromatic profile without masking the house’s identity or the finesse of the distillate.
On the nose, smoky notes blend with riper fruit, spice, and lightly toasted wood notes. On the palate, the peat remains present but is beautifully controlled, gradually revealing more aromatic richness and a particularly pleasant, lingering finish.
Beyond the previous references, Le Breuil regularly develops new editions highlighting different aging styles, finishes, or aromatic profiles. The Smoky Oloroso, Sherry Oloroso, Maris Otter, Chevalier, Expression de Malt, and the Pedro Ximénez Finish whisky are just a few examples.
To fully enjoy Le Breuil whiskies, a few simple guidelines allow you to reveal all their aromatic richness.
First of all, it is ideal to serve the whisky at room temperature, without chilling it excessively so as not to block the expression of the aromas.
The choice of glass also plays an important role. A glass that is slightly narrowed at the top, such as a tulip or Glencairn glass, allows for better concentration of aromas and makes it easier to analyze the whisky on the nose.
Before tasting, it is also recommended to let the spirit aerate for a few minutes in the glass so that it can gradually reveal all its complexity.
Tasting is generally carried out in several stages: observe the color, discover the initial aromas on the nose, then take a small amount in the mouth in order to identify the evolution of flavors. Depending on the references, Le Breuil whiskies can reveal notes of fruit, malted cereals, mild spices, wood, or even a slight peatiness in certain cuvées.
For enthusiasts, adding a few drops of water can also be interesting. This practice sometimes allows the whisky to open up further and reveal certain more subtle aromas, especially in the most concentrated expressions.
