Created in 1937, the Côtes-du-Rhône AOC covers more than 30,700 hectares of vineyards between Vienne (south of Lyon) and Avignon. This appellation extends across 6 departments and 171 municipalities. While it is mainly renowned for its production of red wines (86%), the region also produces rosés (8%) and whites (6%). The climate here is predominantly Mediterranean with warm, sunny days influenced by the Mistral wind. The Grenache grape variety is the most widely planted and is often blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre. For white wines, 80% of the plantings come from Grenache Blanc, mainly complemented by Clairette, Bourboulenc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier.Several types of soils are present, including clay-limestone, rolled pebbles, and sandy soils. Finally, the Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages AOC highlights 95 communes (8,000 hectares), all located in the southern part of the vineyard, offering higher-quality terroirs. Of these 95 villages, 38 can even be mentioned in addition to the appellation on the bottle. This latter appellation produces 98% red wines.
