AOC Bergerac

The Bergerac AOC extends to the south of the Dordogne department and is one of the main appellations of the South-West wine region. Its vineyard covers about 7,150 hectares of vines, spread over a great diversity of soils (clay-limestone, sandy, and gravelly). The oceanic climate and the geographical location of the appellation also offer ideal conditions for producing a wide range of styles. Red wines are mainly based on blends of Merlot, Cabernet franc, Cabernet sauvignon, and Malbec. As for white wines, Sauvignon, Sémillon, and Muscadelle are the main varieties and allow for the creation of wines with varied profiles, ranging from lively and aromatic to rounder and indulgent whites. The Bergerac AOC stands out for its ability to offer accessible and expressive wines, while also revealing, on its best terroirs, ambitious and complex cuvées. A comprehensive appellation, it provides a great gateway to discover the full diversity of South-Western wines !

AOC Bergerac: a comprehensive appellation

The Bergerac AOC is one of the iconic appellations of the South-West wine region. Located in Dordogne, at the heart of a vast vineyard renowned for the diversity of its wines and the richness of its terroirs, this appellation stands out for its particularly comprehensive wine production, covering a wide range of styles: red, dry white, semi-sweet, sweet, and rosé wines. This diversity allows Bergerac to cater to all tastes, from wines for immediate enjoyment to cuvées with great aging potential.

Bergerac also benefits from a privileged natural environment, between oceanic climate and influences from the South-West, promoting a gradual ripening of the grapes. This climatic and geographical diversity is directly reflected in the aromas of the wines and the balance on the palate, with cuvées of beautiful typicity, marked both by fruit, freshness, and offering a beautiful structure.

Often compared to Bordeaux, Bergerac indeed shares many similarities with the Bordeaux vineyard, notably its grape varieties, soils, and climate. However, Bergerac stands out for its more affordable prices and often a more direct approach, with generous wines, expressive and easy to enjoy from their youth. This richness is also based on the diversity of its terroirs (limestone, clay-limestone, gravel), allowing for the production of a wide range, from supple and fruity wines to structured and complex cuvées.

It is this combination of geographical origin, varied grape varieties, and the expertise of the estates that gives Bergerac wines a strong identity, both rooted in tradition and open to modernity.

History and origin of Bergerac wine

The Bergerac vineyard has an ancient history dating back to Antiquity. The cultivation of the vine was locally introduced by the Romans, who were already taking advantage of the favorable conditions offered by the Dordogne valley to develop wine production.

In the Middle Ages, the Bergerac vineyard experienced a real boom thanks to its strategic position along the Dordogne river, facilitating the transport of wines to the port of Bordeaux, then to England and northern Europe. Despite Bordeaux's commercial dominance, Bergerac wines still managed to carve out a place for themselves, notably thanks to their quality and accessibility.

In the 19th century, like all French wine regions, Bergerac had to face the phylloxera crisis and a necessary reorganization of its production. It is in this context that a desire for increased quality and official structuring is gradually emerging.

The Bergerac AOC was thus created in 1936, as part of the establishment of the French AOC system. This recognition makes it possible to regulate practices, define varieties, yields, and production areas, and above all to guarantee the origin and quality of the wines. Throughout the 20th century, the Bergerac vineyard also continued its structuring with the recognition of complementary AOCs in the region such as Monbazillac, Pécharmant, or Montravel, further strengthening the diversity of the regional offering.

Today, Bergerac holds a very important place among the wines of Southwest France, while still often remaining in the shadow of Bordeaux.Yet, it is one of the largest appellation vineyards in France, with a qualitative production that is absolutely worth discovering !

The main grape varieties of the Bergerac AOP

Bergerac wines are based on blends of several emblematic grape varieties, allowing for a great diversity of styles and a beautiful typicity of cuvées.

The red grape varieties of Bergerac

For red and rosé wines, three grape varieties dominate:

  • Merlot: it brings suppleness, roundness, and seductive fruity aromas to the cuvées.
  • Cabernet Franc: it provides structure, liveliness, as well as spicy and sometimes vegetal notes.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon: it enhances color, tannic power, and aromatic depth.

Malbec is also sometimes present in blends. The combination of all these grape varieties makes it possible to produce balanced red wines, that are both fruity and structured, with a beautiful mouthfeel and good aging potential depending on the cuvées and vintages.

The white grape varieties of Bergerac

For white wine, the blends are also based on three main varieties:

  • Sauvignon blanc: it is used for its beautiful acidity and expressive fruity aromas.
  • Sémillon: it brings roundness and volume on the palate.
  • Muscadelle: a minority variety, it is used for its aromatic finesse.

Note that Sauvignon gris is also present in the vineyard. All these grape varieties make it possible to produce a wide range of white wines, ranging from dry and lively profiles to sweet wines, depending on the desired style and the ripeness level of the grapes.

The other appellations of the Bergerac region

The Bergerac AOC is at the heart of a group of AOCs that make up the Bergerac vineyard, within the Dordogne. These denominations, although distinct, thus share the same geographical origin and similar natural conditions, while each developing its own identity.

  • Monbazillac AOC: it is undoubtedly the best-known appellation of the Bergerac region after Bergerac and specializes in the production of sweet white wines. Made from Sémillon, Sauvignon, and Muscadelle, its cuvées offer aromas of candied fruit, honey, and a beautiful richness on the palate, with excellent aging potential.
  • AOC Pécharmant: this AOC is dedicated to red wines, often more structured and powerful. Blends based on Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec here produce deep wines, with notes of dark fruits, spices, and a beautiful length.
  • AOC Montravel: a versatile AOC, producing both dry whites and reds. The whites are distinguished by their freshness and elegance, while the reds offer a good balance between fruit and structure.
  • AOC Rosette: more confidential, this AOC produces sweet white wines, characterized by sweetness, aromas of ripe fruits, and a beautiful roundness.

These different AOPs thus allow you to explore the full diversity of the region's vineyards. Between red wines, dry whites, rosés, sweet and dessert wines, the Bergerac area indeed offers a complete range of profiles, capable of meeting all tastes and every occasion !

Which dishes to pair with a wine from the Bergerac AOC ?

Thanks to the diversity of its styles, the Bergerac AOP offers great versatility at the table. Whether it is a red wine, a dry white, a sweet wine, or even an indulgent rosé, each profile naturally finds its place in varied pairings, from everyday meals to more gourmet occasions.

With red wines

They ideally accompany red meats, grilled dishes, but also saucy dishes such as slow-cooked or confit beef. Their structure and black fruit aromas bring depth and balance to the palate. The lighter ones will also pair very well with a charcuterie board.

We recommend a serving temperature between 16-18°C to fully enjoy these cuvées.

With white wines

Dominated by Sauvignon, Bergerac whites stand out for their beautiful liveliness. They are therefore perfect with grilled fish, seafood or even mixed salads.

To allow these cuvées to fully develop their aromas, we recommend a serving temperature between 8-10°C.

With sweet wines

These cuvées, with their lovely sweetness, pair perfectly with foie gras, but also with desserts or blue cheeses. Their richness in sugar is balanced by a good freshness.

To break the sensation of sweetness in the mouth, a serving temperature between 6-8°C is ideal here.

With rosé

Light, fruity, and refreshing, they are ideal as an aperitif or with summer cuisine, such as grilled meats, vegetables, or simple and friendly dishes.

In order to preserve the freshness of these fresh and indulgent wines, we recommend serving your Bergerac rosé between 6-8°C.

In summary

As you will have understood, the Bergerac AOC stands out for its ability to cover all wine styles, from structured reds to lively whites, and even sweet cuvées. This diversity is based on a logic of blending varieties and a great diversity of terroirs, allowing for profiles that are both accessible and ambitious, depending on the estates and vintages. Bergerac is therefore an appellation with remarkable character that every enthusiast should have in their cellar !
