Cognac Petite Champagne, the preferred terroir of the house

The Lhéraud family cultivates most of its vineyard on the Petite Champagne cru, one of the six terroirs making up the Cognac appellation alongside Grande Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bons Bois, and Bois Ordinaires. Located in the heart of the Charentes, the Petite Champagne area is renowned for its clay-limestone soils rich in chalk. Although less prestigious than Grande Champagne (Premier Cru), Petite Champagne is nevertheless also considered one of the best crus of the appellation.

Cognac from Petite Champagne is generally distinguished by its finesse, its freshness and its aromatic elegance. Young eaux-de-vie often display floral, fruity, and slightly spicy notes, while extended aging in contact with wood allows them to develop greater depth with aromas of dried fruits, vanilla, leather, tobacco, and rancio. This ability to withstand several decades of aging explains why Petite Champagne is today one of the most sought-after crus in the region.

By comparison, Borderies often give rise to rounder and more floral cognacs, while Fins Bois generally produce spirits that are smoother and more approachable in their youth. This diversity of terroirs contributes to the magnificent richness of the Cognac appellation.

From Ugni Blanc to Cognac

Like the vast majority of Cognac producers, the Lhéraud family mainly cultivates Ugni Blanc, the emblematic grape variety of the Charentes and a true pillar of the appellation and signature of the spirit. Representing more than 95% of the Cognac vineyard, it is particularly appreciated for its high natural acidity, its low alcohol content and its ability to produce fresh and balanced wines. These characteristics make it an ideal raw material for the production of the great eaux-de-vie used in cognac making.

After the harvest, the grapes are pressed and then vinified to obtain a dry white wine. Not very aromatic when tasted alone, these wines nevertheless possess the qualities sought after for distillation. In accordance with Charente tradition, distillation is carried out in copper stills using the double distillation method. This process allows for the selection of the finest fractions and preserves the aromatic finesse of the future cognacs.

The resulting distillates are then aged for several years in oak barrels. Through contact with the wood and oxygen, they gradually gain in complexity and develop notes of vanilla, spices, dried fruits, cocoa, and even rancio. This mastery of aging enables the Guy Lhéraud house to produce elegant and refined cognacs, true to the character of the Charente crus, particularly Petite Champagne.

Vintage cognac, a specialty of Guy Lhéraud

While the vast majority of cognacs sold worldwide are blends of several eaux-de-vie and several harvest years, the Cognac Guy Lhéraud estate has built a solid reputation thanks to its expertise in vintage cognac. Each bottle then comes from a single harvest (a single vintage) and reflects the unique characteristics of a given year, thus offering a more authentic and distinctive expression of the Charente terroir.

The Cognac Guy Lhéraud estate has preserved for many decades a significant heritage of cognacs patiently aging in its cellars. This wealth now allows it to offer a wide selection of old vintages covering different periods and various aromatic profiles. Thanks to a vintage cognac, enthusiasts can thus discover the influence of climate, time, and aging on the evolution of Cognac eaux-de-vie.

Particularly sought after to celebrate a birth year, a wedding anniversary, or a significant event, Guy Lhéraud vintage cognacs therefore hold a special place in the world of Cognac. Produced in limited quantities and often presented in decanters or gift boxes, these cuvées are collector's items appreciated by lovers of old cognacs.

VS, VSOP, XO: age statements in Cognac

Like all producers of the appellation, Guy Lhéraud offers several categories of spirits defined by their minimum aging period in oak barrels. These indications allow enthusiasts to better understand the style and maturity of the eaux-de-vie present in each bottle.

  • The VS (Very Special) designation refers first of all to a cognac whose youngest spirit has aged for at least 2 years in cask. Fresh and fruity, these spirits generally highlight aromas of grape, white fruits, and flowers.
  • VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) must be made from eaux-de-vie aged at least 4 years. More complex, they gradually develop notes of vanilla, mild spices, dried fruits, and delicately mellowed wood.
  • The XO (Extra Old) category, to which the designations Napoleon and Hors d'Âge notably belong, has required since 2018 a minimum aging of 10 years for the youngest spirit in the blend. These cognacs generally offer greater depth and aromatic richness, with notes of cocoa, tobacco, leather, nuts, and rancio. Before 2018, the minimum age required for the XO category was set at 6 years.

Pineau des Charentes and other creations

While Guy Lhéraud is above all recognized for his cognacs, the estate also produces remarkable Pineaux des Charentes. This iconic regional specialty is obtained by blending freshly pressed grape must with cognac, followed by aging that imparts roundness and complexity. Available in white or rosé, Pineaux Lhéraud captivate with their balance between fruity freshness, sweetness, and aromatic richness, with a special mention for the exceptional Vieux Pineau des Charentes 15 years.

True to its commitment to the Charente terroir, Cognac Guy Lhéraud thus promotes all the traditional know-how of the region. Whether it is Cognac or Pineau des Charentes, each cuvée is crafted with the same demand for quality and attention to detail.

The Cognac Guy Lhéraud estate is also known for its involvement in the world of Armagnac through the brand Baron Gaston Legrand.
