Stéphane Ogier: a story of excellence in Côte Rôtie

Established in Ampuis for over seven generations, the Ogier family embodies the soul and tradition of Côte Rôtie. When Stéphane joined his father in 1997, he set out to elevate the estate among the essential benchmarks of the Northern Rhône Valley. Today, his name is synonymous with refinement and high standards.

The vineyard stretches across steep hillsides where  Syrah reigns supreme, enhanced by a few touches of Viognier. The schist and granite soils, combined with ideal exposures and the natural drainage of the slopes, provide a unique setting for the flourishing of the vines. The continental climate, tempered by the presence of the Rhône, encourages a slow and steady ripening of the grapes, an essential condition for producing wines that are deep, balanced, and of great aromatic complexity.

Stéphane Ogier’s philosophy is based on meticulous plot-by-plot work. Each terroir is vinified separately in order to express all its uniqueness, before being precisely blended to create bottles with a strong identity. The house style is distinguished by a constant pursuit of elegance and purity: intensity of aromas, silky textures, and remarkable length on the palate.

From accessible Côtes-du-Rhône and indulgent to the prestigious Côte Rôtie, each wine reflects the same demand for quality. The Stéphane Ogier estate thus stands out as a true benchmark, sought after by both enthusiasts and great connoisseurs in search of unique emotions.

The terroirs and appellations of Domaine Stéphane Ogier

The vineyard of Domaine Stéphane Ogier extends over a mosaic of plots located mainly in Côte Rôtie, but also in the AOC Condrieu, Côtes-du-Rhône as well as in IGP Collines Rhodaniennes.

In Ampuis, the Syrah vines in AOC Côte Rôtie cling to the steep slopes of the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, two legendary terroirs with complementary characters: the Côte Brune, with its darker soils rich in clay, produces powerful, structured wines built for aging. The Côte Blonde, on lighter, sandier soils, yields bottles of remarkable finesse and elegance.

The Viognier, cultivated on the granite hillsides of Condrieu, expresses all its aromatic richness and floral delicacy.

The estate also owns plots in the Saint-Joseph appellation, located on granite hillsides. These particularly well-drained and poor soils force the vine to draw deep, resulting in concentrated and aromatic grapes. Here, Syrah expresses all its power and finesse, producing a cuvée with excellent aging potential.

Beyond these prestigious appellations, Stéphane Ogier also highlights terroirs located in AOC Côtes-du-Rhône and in IGP Collines Rhodaniennes. These more extensive vineyards, with less restrictive specifications, allow for the expression of another facet of the Northern Rhône, while offering cuvées at more accessible prices.

Thus, the Côtes-du-Rhône from the estate come from plots mainly planted with Syrah, on soils combining rolled pebbles, clay, and sand. These terroirs give rise to elegant and appealing indulgent wines, characterized by aromas of black fruits, spices, and a beautiful freshness on the palate.

The IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, for its part, covers a vast area stretching across the foothills of the northern Rhône. Stéphane Ogier cultivates both Syrah and Viognier there. These terroirs, less demanding than those of Côte-Rôtie or Condrieu, allow the production of bottles with a more immediate and accessible style: supple and aromatic reds, fresh and floral whites. These cuvées represent an ideal entry point into the Ogier universe, already revealing the precision of the plot-based work and the attention to detail that characterize the house, all with more affordable prices.

The grape varieties of Domaine Stéphane Ogier

Domaine Stéphane Ogier mainly cultivates Syrah and Viognier, as well as a few other varieties suited to the Northern Rhône Valley.

Syrah is the estate's flagship grape variety, present in all appellations: Côte Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Côtes-du-Rhône, and IGP Collines Rhodaniennes. On the schist soils of Côte Rôtie, it produces wines of exceptional power and complexity, with aromas of black fruits, violet, spices, and a fine, elegant tannic structure. In Saint-Joseph, Syrah reveals more freshness and minerality thanks to the granite soils, while in Côtes-du-Rhône and Collines Rhodaniennes, it produces more approachable, indulgent and fruity cuvées.

Viognier is, for its part, the unique white grape variety cultivated for Condrieu and sometimes added in small amounts to certain Côte Rôtie blends where it is permitted in the assemblage. It brings floral and fruity notes (apricot, peach, white flowers) as well as a silky texture, offering roundness and elegance to the whites.

The estate also sometimes uses small proportions of Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites, notably in Côtes-du-Rhône, in order to bring aromatic complexity and structure. These grape varieties add floral nuances or notes of honey and almonds, enriching the aromatic palette.

Tasting advice and food and wine pairings

To fully enjoy the wines from Domaine Stéphane Ogier, it is helpful to know a few good tasting practices.

Thus, red wines made from Syrah often gain in expression after a short aeration. Opening them one to two hours before serving or decanting them can therefore reveal more of their complex bouquet. The ideal serving temperature for these cuvées is between 16 and 18°C.

White wines, especially those from the Condrieu appellation or the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, are best enjoyed chilled, around 11-13°C for the more complex ones and 8-10°C for lighter and fruitier profiles. These temperatures will allow you to preserve the freshness of these whites and highlight all their aromas.

When it comes to food and wine pairings, the red wines of Côte Rôtie, both powerful and elegant, pair perfectly with aged rib of beef, game, or a rack of lamb roasted with herbs. Their tannic structure and aromatic depth also work wonders with slow-cooked dishes or matured cheeses. Softer in style, Saint-Joseph reds are excellent with grilled white meats, guinea fowl with mushrooms, or even a delicate summer vegetable tart.

The white wines of the Rhône, especially Condrieu cuvées, are a perfect match for more delicate dishes. Roasted sea bass fillet, pan-seared scallops, or poultry in a creamy sauce bring out all the finesse and smoothness of these bottles. The IGP cuvées offer an excellent alternative to accompany vegetarian dishes, mixed salads, or soft cheeses, while maintaining an excellent balance.

For those wishing to build a varied cellar, the estate also offers selections suited to different tasting occasions: from age-worthy wines to more immediate cuvées, prices vary according to the appellations, from the prestigious Rôtie to the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, but the quality remains consistent.
