Dominique Laurent

Founded in the early 1990s, the Dominique Laurent estate was born from the career change of its namesake, a former pastry chef who became one of the most prominent figures in Burgundy. As a négociant-winemaker, Dominique stands out for his extremely rigorous selection of old plots, mainly in Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The estate's style is based on advanced but controlled ripeness, precise extractions, and ambitious aging, often in new barrels from his own cooperage. The wines, made from Pinot Noir (mainly) as well as Chardonnay, captivate with their concentration, their elegance, and their remarkable aging potential

History of the Dominique Laurent estate

Dominique Laurent is one of the most respected names in Burgundy. The estate is indeed renowned for its deep and elegant red wines from the emblematic terroirs of the Côte d’Or (Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune). High-end négociant, Dominique Laurent selects the best plots, very often from old vines, to produce cuvées that fully express the terroir of renowned appellations.

It is also important to distinguish the Dominique Laurent estate from the Laurent Père et Fils estate, two very distinct entities. Historically, and as mentioned, Dominique Laurent first established himself as a leading négociant in Burgundy, selecting grapes from prestigious appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Chambolle-Musigny, Pommard, Vosne-Romanée, and Échezeaux, before personally overseeing the vinification and aging processes.

Subsequently, in 2006, Dominique Laurent created an 11-hectare winegrowing estate with his son Jean, Laurent Père et Fils, corresponding to a winery where the vines are cultivated, harvested, and vinified directly by the family. While the négociant activity allows for a great diversity of appellations and terroirs, Laurent Père et Fils emphasizes a more “winegrower” approach, while maintaining the house style: controlled concentration, purity of fruit, and precise aging. Here too, we find magnificent appellations such as Beaune, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Pommard (Grands Épenots, Les Rugiens, Clos Vougeot) for the reds, or Meursault and Marsannay in white.

The estate's appellations and wines

Domaine Dominique Laurent vinifies a wide range of prestigious Burgundy appellations. The following AOCs are notably found in the range.

-Gevrey-Chambertin: powerful and structured red wines, symbols of the nobility of Burgundy Pinot Noir. The estate's Vieilles Vignes cuvée offers dense substance, ripe tannins, and great depth, while maintaining beautiful aromatic precision.

-Nuits-Saint-Georges: an emblematic appellation producing rich and intense wines, without compromise on the expression of the terroir. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée from Dominique Laurent stands out for its concentration, energy, and aging potential.

-Chambolle-Musigny: finesse and elegance on the palate, with some of the most delicate cuvées in Burgundy. The estate offers a silky, floral Vieilles Vignes cuvée with great purity of fruit.

-Vosne-Romanée: a legendary terroir giving rise to wines of great complexity and remarkable aromatic finesse. The estate’s Vieilles Vignes cuvée is characterized by its depth, spicy notes, and masterful balance.

-Pommard: robust and intense wines. The estate’s Vieilles Vignes cuvée combines power, structure, and a beautiful expression of dark fruit.

-Aloxe-Corton: generous and expressive reds, combining power and freshness. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée signed by Dominique Laurent offers beautiful aromatic depth and a pronounced structure, ideal for aging.

-Savigny-lès-Beaune: refined and balanced wines, offering precise fruitiness and a supple structure. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée from the estate is particularly accessible in its youth, while gaining in complexity over time.

-Beaune Premier Cru: harmonious and elegant cuvées, combining fruit finesse, structure, and complexity linked to classified climates. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée from the estate expresses beautiful precision and great qualitative consistency.

-Marsannay: an emblematic appellation in the north of the Côte de Nuits, producing straightforward and indulgent wines. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée from the estate favors the expression of fruit, freshness, and balance.

-Fixin: wines of character, structured and deep, often compared to their prestigious neighbors from Gevrey-Chambertin. The Vieilles Vignes bottle from Dominique Laurent offers beautiful density, solid tannins, and an intense aromatic expression.

Style, vinification and aging

The style of wines from Domaine Dominique Laurent is based on two strong principles: purity of fruit and respect for the terroir. The vines are cultivated using environmentally friendly practices and controlled yields, which enhances the aromatic concentration of the grapes. The estate also favors manual harvesting as well as minimalist vinification with indigenous yeasts and very low doses of sulfites.

Aging is also a key element of Dominique Laurent's style. The wines are indeed aged for long periods in new oak barrels, some of which come from the family cooperage. The quality of the wood and the toasting allows for cuvées with integrated and rich woody aromas, while preserving the freshness and elegance of the fruit.
