IGP Coteaux de l'Ardèche

The IGP Coteaux de l'Ardèche is a designation covering nearly 7,500 hectares between Ardèche and Gard. This vast territory is distinguished by a great diversity of landscapes: in the west, mountainous reliefs dominate, while in the east and south, plateaus, valleys, and southern areas marked by garrigue stretch out. The soils, mainly clay-limestone but very varied depending on the area, combined with a contrasting climate, allow a wide range of wine styles. In the north, the vineyards benefit from a more temperate influence, while in the south, the heat and dryness give rise to red, white, and rosé wines that are more sun-drenched and generous. As for grape varieties, production relies on classics from the Rhône Valley. For reds, Merlot, Grenache Noir and Syrah dominate. In white, Viognier, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Grenache Blanc offer varied and expressive aromatic profiles. Accessible and dynamic, this appellation appeals with its excellent level of quality and its ability to offer wines at attractive prices. A great opportunity to discover and unearth real gems !

An IGP at the heart of the Rhône Valley

Stretching across the departments of Ardèche and Gard, the IGP Coteaux de l’Ardèche is fully part of the Rhône Valley’s winegrowing dynamic. This protected geographical indication covers a vast area, featuring limestone plateaus (Haut-Vivarais and Cévennes), sun-drenched hillsides, and wilder zones.

This mosaic of terroirs, combined with a climate influenced by both northern and Mediterranean factors, allows for a nuanced expression of the many grape varieties planted here. The varied soils (clay-limestone, sandy-clay, etc.) also play a key role in the wine profiles, bringing freshness, concentration, or suppleness depending on the area.

Driven by a new generation of winemakers and producers, Ardèche wine production has been gaining in precision and ambition for several years. Each estate, house, or château highlights its environment and refines its methods with the aim of offering increasingly accomplished cuvées. This dynamic is now reflected in wines with a significantly improving quality level, which accurately showcase the potential of this still discreet but rapidly growing wine region.

IGP Coteaux de l’Ardèche: a great diversity of grape varieties and styles

The IGP Coteaux de l’Ardèche stands out for the richness of its grape varieties, allowing the production of red, white, and rosé wines suited to all preferences.

For reds, grape varieties such as Syrah, Grenache Noir, or Merlot dominate, resulting in supple wines, fruity or more structured wines depending on the soils and production choices.

In white, Viognier, Chardonnay and also Sauvignon blanc are predominant and offer expressive wines, characterized by freshness and a beautiful aromatic intensity.

The rosés, for their part, appeal with their lightness and refreshing character, perfect for friendly and summer consumption. Some sparkling wines are also produced.

This great freedom in the choice of grape varieties (many other varieties are permitted) allows winemakers to create original cuvées that fully showcase the specificities of the Ardèche terroirs.
