The Saint-Julien appellation is particularly appreciated by amateurs because it represents a magnificent compromise between the power of wines from its neighbors Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe further north and the sweetness and more feminine character of an appellation like Margaux further south. With 11 Grands Crus Classés such as Château Gruaud-Larose or Château Lagrange, the AOC shines with its 920 hectares producing only great red wines. Its terroir is marked by clay-limestone subsoils and gravel soil. Cabernet-Sauvignon is the most planted variety here, covering 60% of the vineyard, and is complemented by Merlot (32 %) as well as other varieties such as petit verdot and cabernet-franc.
