AOC Maury

The Maury AOC is located in Roussillon, not far from Perpignan, and covers 1,150 hectares. The predominant grape variety here is Grenache Noir (80% of plantings), complemented by Carignan, Syrah, and Mourvèdre for the reds, while Maccabeu, Muscat, Grenache Gris, and Grenache Blanc make up the majority of white wine production. The soils in the area are very schist-rich and the climate is hot and dry. The appellation offers dry wines but is mainly renowned for its exquisite Vins Doux Naturels (VDN). Very low yields are practiced to concentrate the grapes’ aromas, sugars, and acids. Then, once the berries are pressed, the alcoholic fermentation will be initiated and stopped by the addition of wine alcohol (fortification), allowing the preservation of the natural sugar. Depending on the type of wine, the aging process can then last from a few months to several decades. This is the case here with this magnificent cuvée from Mas Amiel, a benchmark in the region.
