History of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

The history of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is rooted in the hills and valleys of Abruzzo, in the heart of central Italy. The Montepulciano grape variety has been cultivated there for centuries, even though the first written mention attesting to its local presence dates only from the late 18th century. Before that, several sources already referred to related varieties, such as Prugnolo, demonstrating the ancient and essential role of the vine in the culture and economy of the region.

In the 19th century, Montepulciano gradually established itself as the emblematic grape variety of Abruzzo. The phylloxera crisis, which was devastating European vineyards at the time, profoundly disrupted local viticulture but also paved the way for a rethinking of plantations. During the reconstitution of the vineyard, Montepulciano was favored on the best terroirs, further strengthening its presence and confirming its central role in the wine identity of the region.

Then, in the 20th century, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo truly gained in prestige. Long considered a generous and accessible table wine, it then changed status thanks to visionary producers who decided to reveal all its finesse. The year 1968 thus marked an important turning point: the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC designation was officially created, establishing a precise production framework. In 2003, the Colline Teramane area even achieved the prestigious DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) status, the highest level in the hierarchy of Italian appellations.

Today, the vineyards of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC stretch for nearly 300 km along the east coast of Italy and are spread across the provinces of  Teramo, Pescara, Chieti, and L'Aquila. The appellation represents about 80% of the wine production of Abruzzo, and is one of the most important DOCs in the country. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is also one of the most well-known and exported Italian wines worldwide.

Soils and climate of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC

The terroir of Abruzzo is a central element in the quality of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo wines. The region's soils are mainly clay-limestone, sometimes mixed with sandier or stonier areas, offering excellent drainage and bringing finesse, minerality, and structure to the wines.

Located between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountain range, the region also benefits from a Mediterranean climate tempered by maritime and mountain influences. The proximity to the sea prevents excessive heat in summer and extreme cold in winter, while the mountains create a significant temperature difference between day and night (thermal amplitude), which is essential for developing acidity and aromatic complexity in the berries.

These two combined influences allow Montepulciano grapes to ripen harmoniously, resulting in wines that are balanced between elegant fruitiness, freshness, and power.

Wines from the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo appellation

Wines from the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo appellation come almost exclusively from the Montepulciano grape variety. This generous grape is distinguished both by its deep color and its  expressive aromas, resulting in structured, rich, and intensely fruity wines. Although rare, small proportions of other red and white grape varieties, notably Sangiovese or Trebbiano Bianco, may be blended.

The appellation’s regulations require that the local wine be made up of at least 85% Montepulciano. In practice, however, the vast majority of producers make wines that are 100% Montepulciano, as this grape is of high quality and stands on its own.

And what about tasting, you may ask?! Well, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC offers a myriad of styles, directly correlated to the terroir, the estate, as well as the exact name of the appellation mentioned on your bottle.

  • Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Rosso: these are the classic red wines of the region. They are supple, fruity, indulgents, and express notes of cherry, plum, and sweet spices. They usually present a balanced structure with beautiful acidity and fine tannins.
  • Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Rosso Riserva: the Riserva designation here specifies that the wine must be aged for at least two years before being released for sale. Aging is generally done in oak barrels but can also take place in large casks or stainless steel tanks. On the palate, these wines develop a great deal of complexity. You will find aromas of ripe black fruits, cocoa, tobacco, and spices, with more pronounced tannins and a long finish.
  • Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane: a prestigious and strict appellation, offering wines from the best plots in the province of Teramo, in the north of Abruzzo. The cuvées from this appellation generally offer power, elegance, and complexity, combining black fruits, spices, and mineral nuances. The tannins are present but silky, and the finish is harmonious and persistent, ideal for lovers of great wines. As with the Riserva designation, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane must be aged for at least two years before being released to the market.
  • Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Cerasuolo : The Cerasuolo is a Montepulciano rosé distinguished by its deep color and beautiful indulgentise. Aromas of cherry, strawberry, and floral notes are usually found in this style of wine. Light and fruity, it is best enjoyed young.

Thus, whether you are seeking freshness and lightness, balance and fruitiness, or power and complexity, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo offers a style suited to every occasion and every palate!
