Summary
History and origins of the Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard
The first traces of viticulture in the Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard appeared more than 2,000 years ago around the famous rocks of Solutré and Vergisson, two emblematic sites of the region.
During this period, the Romans introduced and cultivated the vine thanks to a favorable climate and limestone soils suitable for viticulture. Consumption was then mainly local, but sometimes also intended for export to other regions of the Roman Empire. However, viticulture was not yet truly developed as a commercial activity.
In the Middle Ages, thanks to the flourishing wine trade via the Saône, everything accelerated. At that time, the monks of the Abbey of Cluny as well as those of the Abbey of Cîteaux, further north, played a key role in the development of the vineyard. Their influence thus extended throughout the region and the reputation of Pouilly-Fuissé wines began to take root.
At this time, the reputation of Mâconnais wines was less prestigious than that of the wines from the Côtes de Nuits or Beaune (as is still the case today), but viticulture was nonetheless well established and the local crus appreciated.
During the Renaissance, the demand for wine developed, and the cuvées from the Mâconnais began to circulate more widely in France and Europe. Winemaking techniques then gradually evolved, and the interest of aristocrats and bourgeois in Burgundy wine led to an increase in production as well as an improvement in quality. However, the reputation of Pouilly-Fuissé wines was not yet distinct and the wines of the Mâconnais remained in the shadow of the great crus located further north.
For a long time, the vineyard was moreover mainly planted with Gamay, a grape variety that is today the star of Beaujolais. It was only at the end of the 19th century, after the devastation caused by phylloxera, that Chardonnay became the king grape variety. This change then marked a decisive turning point in the profile of the regional crus.
In 1936, the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation was officially created, thus clearly and legally defining the vineyard as well as the type of wines that could be produced there.
But the story does not end there ! In 2020, after 12 years of collective efforts by local winegrowers with the INAO (National Institute of Origin and Quality), Pouilly-Fuissé finally saw the recognition of its Premier Crus. 22 climats considered the best terroirs of the vineyard were thus distinguished. Among these plots are names such as “ Vers Cras ”, “ Pouilly ” or “ Les Perrières ”.
Today, the appellation extends over 4 communes (Solutré-Pouilly, Fuissé, Vergisson and Chaintré) and covers just over 750 hectares of which a quarter is classified as Premier Cru.

Climate and soils of the Pouilly-Fuissé AOC
The Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard benefits from a temperate climate with a slight continental tendency. This means cold winters and hot summers, perfect for viticulture. Rainfall is also relatively regular (around 800 mm per year). This climate allows for a gradual ripening of the grapes, thus preserving the natural acidity of Chardonnay.
As for the soils, these are mainly clay-limestone, dating back to the Jurassic era, 150 to 180 million years ago. These rich and complex terroirs nevertheless vary from one plot to another, ranging from clayey marls to very stony soils, each bringing a well-defined typicity to the wines. Finally, the vineyard is located between 200m and 400m in altitude.

The wines of Pouilly-Fuissé
As you will have understood, Pouilly-Fuissé is a white wine made exclusively from the grape variety Chardonnay.
The Pouilly-Fuissé cuvées generally display a color ranging from pale gold to deep gold, sometimes with slight green highlights. This elegant color heralds lively and fragrant wines, which retain a beautiful freshness.
On the nose as on the palate, you will find fruity notes, such as peach, pear, lemon or grapefruit. Most of the wines are also aged in oak barrels and reveal a beautiful roundness, a lot of indulgentise as well as nuances of vanilla, butter, hazelnut and almond.
Depending on the location of the vines, the aromatic nuances can vary greatly. For example, cuvées from the slopes of Chaintré are often more rich and ample, offering a beautiful structure, while those from Vergisson reveal a more pronounced minerality as well as a certain liveliness on the palate.
Finally, the wines of the region generally show great aging potential. While “ village ” cuvées are generally enjoyed in their youth and ideally up to 5-8 years, quality Premier Crus can be kept for a good ten years without worry.
