The IGP Côtes Catalanes (formerly Vin de Pays Côtes Catalanes) is located in Roussillon and evolves over 4,000 hectares. Production is divided between red wines (50%), rosés (28%) and whites (22%). The climate of the area is hot and sunny, causing severe water stress. The soils of the region are varied, evolving on schists, clay-limestone or even sands and granites. Very many grape varieties can be used, leaving a wide variety of choices to local winemakers. Examples of reds include grenache noir, carignan, cinsault, mourvèdre, syrah or the local Lledoner pelut. In white, grenache blanc, grenache gris, maccabeu, roussanne, marsanne, chardonnay or vermentino can be used. It is difficult to identify a precise style of wine given the diversity existing within the region. Be that as it may, the Château de L'Ou and the Domaine des Schistes are two magnificent examples of the riches of the region.
