The IGP Côtes Catalanes (formerly Vin de Pays Côtes Catalanes) is located in Roussillon and covers 4,000 hectares. Production is divided between red wines (50%), rosés (28%) and whites (22%). The climate of the area is warm and sunny, resulting in significant water stress. The region's soils are varied, ranging from schist, clay-limestone to sand and granite. A wide variety of grape varieties can be used, offering local winemakers a broad range of choices. Among the reds, notable varieties include Grenache Noir, Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah and the local Lledoner Pelut. In white wines, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Maccabeu, Roussanne, Marsanne, Chardonnay or Vermentino may be used. It is difficult to define a precise wine style given the diversity within the region. Nevertheless, Château de L'Ou as well as Domaine des Schistes are two magnificent examples of the region's richness.
