IGP Côtes Catalanes

The IGP Côtes Catalanes, formerly known as Vin de Pays Côtes Catalanes, covers nearly 4,000 hectares in the heart of Roussillon. The production of the appellation is divided between red wines (about 50%), rosés (28%), and whites (22%), reflecting the diversity and richness of this wine-growing region. The terroirs and grape varieties are very diverse here, offering winemakers great freedom. For reds, you will notably find Grenache noir, Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and also Syrah. White wines are based on varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Macabeu, Sauvignon, and Muscat. This wealth of varieties and soils makes it difficult to define a single style for the appellation, but it allows producers to create a wide range of wines, from fruity and generous red wines to aromatic and fresh whites, as well as light and indulgent.

History of the Côtes Catalanes PGI

The Côtes Catalanes PGI is one of the most emblematic geographical indications in the south of France. Located in Roussillon, on the border with Spain, this wine region benefits from a unique environment where Mediterranean influences and Catalan heritage. have blended for several centuries. Vine growing has played a central role here, shaping the landscapes and local history.

Created in 2003 (and renamed in 2009), the Côtes Catalanes PGI allows winemakers to showcase their expertise and offers greater freedom in the choice of grape varieties and blends. This recognition has also helped strengthen the reputation of the region's wines, while allowing producers to create expressive and accessible cuvées.

The vineyard stretches across sun-drenched hillsides, between the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Pyrenees, offering a great variety of soils and microclimates. Certain areas, such as the surroundings of Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, are particularly renowned. Here, each estate tells a unique story of Catalan wine, reflecting the terroir, climate, and local winemaking tradition.

The wines of the IGP Côtes Catalanes

The IGP Côtes Catalanes stands out for the richness and diversity of its wines, a reflection of an exceptional vineyard between the Mediterranean Sea, sun-drenched hillsides, and the foothills of the eastern Pyrenees. Thanks to the freedom granted to winemakers in the choice of grape varieties and winemaking methods, this IGP allows for the production of very diverse cuvées, capable of appealing to lovers of powerful reds as well as fans of fresh whites or light rosés.

Red wines make up the majority of the production and reveal all the warmth and sunshine of Roussillon.Made from grapes such as Grenache Noir, Carignan, Syrah, or Cinsault, these wines offer generous aromas of red and black fruits, sometimes accompanied by spices or garrigue on the palate. In the most prestigious terroirs, around Maury or Tautavel, these wines can prove to be powerful, structured, and of great complexity, perfect for cellaring or convivial meals. Thanks to the dry and sunny climate, many wines are also produced according to organic practices, highlighting respect for the soil and the authenticity of the Catalan terroir.

White wines, mainly made from Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, or other local grape varieties, show another side of the vineyard. They reveal on the palate aromas of citrus fruits, white flowers, and sometimes a beautiful minerality reminiscent of the presence of clay-limestone, schist, and granite soils in the region. These cuvées balance freshness and roundness and pair ideally with seafood or Mediterranean cuisine.

The rosés of the IGP Côtes Catalanes complete this range with fresh, fruity, and light cuvées, ideal for aperitifs or summer meals. Their aromatic expression varies according to the soils and the estate, ranging from notes of strawberry and raspberry to more delicate and floral nuances.

This diversity is also reflected in the sweet and atypical wines of the region, such as certain cuvées from the Côtes Catalanes vinified in the Rancio style, or close to the traditions of Rivesaltes, offering wines that are both powerful, complex, and typically Mediterranean. Whether you wish to explore intense reds, aromatic whites, or original cuvées, the IGP Côtes Catalanes is ideal !
