Among the great names of Mercurey, Château de Chamirey holds a special place. Renowned for the quality of its wines and the diversity of its terroirs, the estate has indeed contributed for several decades to the influence of this emblematic Burgundy appellation. The vineyard of 95 hectares, divided between “village” plots and renowned Premier Cru climates, allows for the exploration of different expressions of Mercurey through cuvées with varied profiles.
The identity of the estate is also based on the work of the Devillard family, owners of the château since 1934. The siblings also own 3 other vineyards, all located in Burgundy, from the Côte de Nuits to the Mâconnais:
Through its various estates, it upholds a common philosophy: to produce wines that are true to their terroir and vintage, while seeking balance, precision, and elegance.
Located in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, between Rully and Givry, the Mercurey appellation is among the major references of Burgundy wine production. With nearly 650 hectares of vineyards, of which around 170 are classified as Premiers Crus (32 climats), Mercurey produces predominantly red wines (80-85% of production) as well as a small share of white wines.
The vineyard extends over the communes of Mercurey and Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu, with plots distributed among hillsides, gentle slopes, and more calcareous areas. This geological diversity, combined with varied exposures, allows for very different profiles depending on the climats.
Mercurey red wines are often recognized for their balance between smoothness, finesse, and character. In their youth, they generally develop notes of ripe red and black fruits, sometimes accompanied by a floral and spicy touch. With aging, more complex aromas of undergrowth, leather, or candied fruits may appear.
Mercurey white wines, made from Chardonnay, remain more confidential but appeal with their balance between tension and roundness, expressing notes of citrus, white flowers, and white-fleshed fruits.
Château de Chamirey produces a total of 11 cuvées, including 3 whites and 8 reds. Here are the most emblematic wines of the range.
