Originally from Tuscany in Italy, this is the king grape of the Chianti appellation where it is often blended with other minority varieties such as mammolo, cannaiolo, cabernet-sauvignon or merlot. Also in Tuscany, it is the only authorized grape of the DOCG Brunello di Montalcino and allows local winemakers to build exceptional wines of class and longevity. In France, it is found in the vineyard Corsica under the name of Niellucciu and is notably the main grape variety of the appellation Patrimonio . This noble variety produces wines of beautiful power and great tannic potential capable of aging gracefully for several decades when aged for long periods in barrels.
