AOC Saint-Julien

The Saint-Julien appellation is particularly appreciated by enthusiasts as it represents a magnificent compromise between the power of wines from its northern neighbors, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe, and the softness as well as the more feminine character of an appellation such as Margaux further south. With 11 Grands Crus Classés such as Château Gruaud-Larose, the AOC shines with its 920 hectares producing only great red wines. Its terroir is characterized by clay-limestone subsoils and gravelly soil. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted grape variety here, covering 60% of the vineyard, and is complemented by Merlot (32%) as well as other varieties such as Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
