AOC Chinon

The Chinon AOC covers 2,300 hectares southeast of Tours. Its climate is semi-oceanic and three terroirs can be identified here: the terraces along the Vienne River (a tributary of the Loire) composed of gravel and sand, certain hillsides made up of yellow tuffeau (limestone), and other hillsides with more  clay-limestone soils. Here, the predominant grape variety is Cabernet Franc (locally called "Breton"), which is used in all red wines (95% of the appellation's production). More rarely, Cabernet Sauvignon is blended in, but must represent less than 10% of the blend. Rosé wines (4%) and white wines (1%) are also produced within the appellation area, and the latter (the whites) are made exclusively from  Chenin grape variety.The wines from the region are sought after for their  light, fruity, and genuine expression of Cabernet Franc, but in warm vintages, as has often been the case in recent years, certain cuvées can display remarkable power. The Fabrice Gasnier estate is a leading reference in the AOC and is well known among all Loire wine enthusiasts.
