Summary
History of the Moulin-à-Vent AOC
The first vines appeared in the Moulin-à-Vent region as early as the Gallo-Roman era. The Romans, taking advantage of the region's high-quality granite soils, introduced the vine to Beaujolais.
Nevertheless, it was only during the Middle Ages that local viticulture truly began to flourish, largely thanks to the work of the monks, especially those from the Abbey of Cluny.
From the 16th century onwards, the wines of the region, then known as "vins de Romanèche" or "vins des Thorins" (named after the village Romanèche-Thorins), became sought after, notably thanks to the development of river trade on the Saône and the proximity of Lyon, an economic and gastronomic center. The famous windmill, built in the 15th century, became during this period a symbol of the region.
The 19th century also marks a period of significant recognition for the wines of Moulin-à-Vent, now considered the "most Burgundian of the crus of Beaujolais". Thanks to their structure, their concentration and their ageing potential, these wines sometimes rival those of Burgundy, particularly with the appellations of the Côte d'Or. The iconic windmill we mentioned earlier becomes a strong symbol and gives its name to the cru.
In 1936, the Moulin-à-Vent designation was officially established, marking a new and crucial milestone. Today, the AOC covers approximately 640 hectares and produces some of the most sought-after wines in the region.

Soils and climate of the Moulin-à-Vent appellation
The terroir of the AOC Moulin-à-Vent is one of the most remarkable in Beaujolais, and it obviously plays a central role in the quality and personality of the wines produced within the appellation.
The soils here are mainly granitic and very old. Sometimes called "gore", these lands also contain a high concentration of manganese, a mineral element that limits the vigor of the vines and promotes the production of concentrated grapes. The soils are also shallow and well-drained, forcing the vines to plunge deep in search of nutrients. The vines of Moulin-à-Vent are mostly planted on hillsides well exposed to the south and southeast, ensuring them optimal sunlight.
Finally, the climate of Moulin-à-Vent is defined as semi-continental, with hot summers (Mediterranean influence), favorable to the ripening of Gamay, and cool nights that preserve the acidity of the grapes. This contrast between warmth and coolness brings balance and finesse to the wines.
The wines of the AOC Moulin-à-Vent
The AOC Moulin-à-Vent is one of the ten prestigious appellations of Beaujolais, and the red wines produced there are exclusively made from the Gamay grape variety.
The local crus are thus distinguished by their intense ruby color. When young, their bouquet evokes notes of violet and black cherry, while with age, they reveal more complex aromas such as truffle, musk, or prune. On the palate, expect a beautiful structure: the cuvées produced by the winemakers are both full-bodied, velvety, and subtly spicy.
The wines of the AOC Moulin-à-Vent are also renowned for their very good aging potential, often considered one of the longest among the Beaujolais crus. On average, a Moulin-à-Vent can indeed be kept between 5 and 10 years. However, cuvées from the highest quality terroirs (Les Thorins, La Rochelle, Champ de Cour, etc.) can evolve favorably for 15 years, or even longer in great vintages.

What to eat with a wine from the AOC Moulin-à-Vent?
Moulin-à-Vent pairs wonderfully with a wide range of dishes. Here are our suggestions to help you create perfect pairings and enhance every sip.
Powerful and elegant, this vintage first sublimates red and white meats. A grilled rib steak Bordelaise style, duck breast with cherries, or even a poultry fillet topped with a creamy sauce will be perfect choices. The silky tannins of these characterful Gamays will pair perfectly with the tender textures and rich flavors of these dishes.
You will also be surprised by the harmony that a Moulin-à-Vent can have with well-prepared vegetarian dishes. For example, let yourself be tempted by an eggplant gratin, vegetable lasagna with sun-kissed vegetables or even a savory mushroom tart.
After a few years of aging, a quality Moulin-à-Vent will also pair wonderfully with characterful cheeses. Époisses, Beaufort, or even Munster will, in this respect, make for rich and indulgentalliances.
For an optimal experience, we recommend serving your bottle at a temperature of 14-16°C.
