History of the Chignin Bergeron appellation

Even if no written source formally confirms it, it is very likely that the hillsides of Chignin were already planted with vines as early as Antiquity. In Roman times, Savoyard viticulture is said to have begun to take shape on the region's clay-limestone soils.

Then, in the Middle Ages, vine cultivation developed under the impetus of the monastic communities and local lords. These players maintained the vineyards and passed on their expertise, allowing the region's white wines to become known locally, particularly for religious ceremonies and banquets.

The first written mention of Bergeron, the local name for the Roussanne white grape variety, appeared in the 15th century. Thus, although Roussanne has been more formally documented in Savoy since the 19th century, it had already been at the heart of local viticulture for several centuries, producing white wines renowned for their finesse, freshness, and minerality.

Over the centuries, Savoyard viticulture continued to become more structured and refined. Thus, from the 15th to the 18th century, the vineyards of Chignin were gradually reorganized: the plots were better defined and the terraces reinforced on the steep slopes. The white wines made from Bergeron then gained a solid reputation, appreciated by locals and religious communities, as well as for trade with neighboring villages and regional markets.

With the formalization of modern viticulture in the 19th century, Roussanne became a grape variety receiving special attention for its ability to produce elegant and aromatic white wines. The experience accumulated over the centuries, combined with the natural qualities of the Savoyard terroir, then allowed the vineyards of Chignin to consolidate their identity.

Despite a centuries-old history and an established local reputation, the Chignin-Bergeron AOC was not officially created until 1973. This late date can be explained by several factors specific to Savoy. Firstly, the region was only integrated into France in 1860. Moreover, the reputation of Chignin-Bergeron remained mainly local, less visible on a national scale than that of the great Bordeaux or Burgundy wines. Obtaining the AOC also required solid evidence of the grape variety’s typicity, consistent quality, and a clearly identified terroir, which took several decades due to the dispersion of the plots and the complexity of the vineyard.

Today, the Chignin-Bergeron appellation is still not widely publicized but is well known among Savoy enthusiasts as well as lovers of great white wines. It covers approximately 270 hectares.

Terroir of the Chignin-Bergeron appellation

The vineyard of the Chignin-Bergeron appellation stretches across the steep slopes around the village of Chignin, between the Bauges and Chartreuse mountain ranges, in the heart of Savoy. Just like Bugey, Chignin-Bergeron perfectly illustrates the richness and typicity of Savoy wines, where terroirs and microclimates shape unique wines.

The vines here mainly benefit from a south to southeast orientation, ideal for the unique Roussanne grape variety, which requires warmth and light in order to express its beautiful aromatic richness. This good exposure also allows the grapes to reach a perfect ripeness, while maintaining the freshness characteristic of mountain wines.

The terroir of the AOC is mainly based on limestone soils mixed with marl and rocky scree. These formations, resulting from ancient glaciations and geological movements, bring tension and minerality to the white wines of Chignin-Bergeron.Each cuvée thus reflects the personality of the soil: the marls provide roundness and volume, while the limestone rock brings structure.

The Savoyard climate, of the temperate mountain type, also plays an essential role in the expression of Chignin-Bergeron wines. The days are rather bright while the cool nights, typical of the altitude and surrounding reliefs, preserve the natural acidity of the grapes and bring liveliness to the wine. This contrast promotes a good balance in the cuvées, although this also depends on the specific conditions of each vintage.

The Roussanne grape variety

The Roussanne grape variety, locally known as Bergeron, is the soul of Chignin-Bergeron and one of the most iconic varieties of Savoy. Like Roussette, another key grape variety of the region, Roussanne perfectly illustrates the finesse of high-altitude white wines and produces aromatic and well-balanced cuvées. This grape variety fully expresses the typicity of the terroir when served in an appropriate glass, then revealing  floral and fruity aromas, as well as an appealing freshness.

Roussanne is also found in various regions of France (Rhône, Languedoc, Provence) as well as in multiple renowned appellations such as Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Péray, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Depending on the vineyard, Roussanne can produce high-end cuvées at premium prices as well as bottles with excellent value for money, less complex but still very appealing. Today, the variety covers around 2,000 hectares planted in France. While this remains modest compared to more renowned grape varieties such as Chardonnay or Sauvignon, Roussanne is nevertheless capable of producing magnificent wines. So don’t hesitate to give it a prime spot in your selection !

The wines of the Chignin-Bergeron AOC

The cuvées of the Chignin-Bergeron appellation stand out for a bold and generous style. These white wines typically display an intense aromatic profile, often more structured and profound than most other Savoy wines, while maintaining a natural elegance.

On the nose, Chignin-Bergeron often seduces the taster with  aromas of white and yellow fruits such as peach, apricot, or pear, sometimes enhanced by floral and honeyed notes. Subtle nuances of sweet spices and almonds may also appear depending on the vintage, offering the wine a complexity that evolves throughout the tasting.

On the palate, the texture is ample and velvety, supported by the freshness and minerality characteristic of the clay-limestone terroir of the Chignin hillsides. Roundness, minerality, and ripe fruit aromas thus combine, creating a remarkable length on the palate and giving these great Savoy wines an excellent ability to pair with gastronomy.

This adaptability makes Chignin-Bergeron a versatile white wine, capable of being enjoyed young for its freshness or of improving over several years, thus gaining in complexity and depth.

What to eat with a Chignin-Bergeron AOC wine?

This white wine from Savoy is therefore naturally an ideal companion for many dishes, whether traditional cuisine or more daring recipes. Here are some pairings to enhance your Savoyard cuvée.

  • Cheeses and Savoyard specialties: Savoyard fondue, raclette, or even tartiflette find a natural pairing with the ample structure and fruitiness of the wines from the Chignin-Bergeron appellation. The minerality of the terroir here highlights the rich and melting flavors of the cheeses.
  • White meats and fish in sauce : Creamy poultry, monkfish fillet with butter, or quenelles find in Chignin Bergeron a perfect balance, between roundness and freshness.
  • Spicy or exotic cuisine: Chignin-Bergeron white wine can perfectly accompany spicy dishes, such as a mild curry or warm Asian preparations. The fruity aromas and minerality of Roussanne then create a beautiful contrast that is well worth trying.

To fully appreciate the white wines of the Chignin-Bergeron appellation, we recommend serving your bottle between 10 and 12°C. This temperature will allow you to enjoy the freshness of this beautiful white wine from Savoy, without masking its delicious aromas. Depending on the vintage and type of cuvée, do not hesitate to also decant your wine, especially when it is young.

As you will have understood, thanks to the unique terroir of Savoy and the distinctive character of the Roussanne grape variety, Chignin-Bergeron is perfect for both friendly meals with friends and more refined dinners. Each bottle thus becomes a moment of discovery and sharing.

The best wines of the Chignin-Bergeron AOC

Many renowned estates produce quality wines within the Chignin-Bergeron appellation. For example, one might think of Domaine Quénard, Adrien Berlioz, or Domaine Louis Magnin.

Nevertheless, among the exceptional winemakers of the appellation, the Domaine Partagé Gilles Berlioz stands out very clearly in our eyes. Located in the very village of Chignin, this small family estate of 5 hectares practices an attentive and respectful biodynamic viticulture of living things.

We particularly recommend the cuvées Les Filles and Les Fripons, two magnificent examples of what the Chignin-Bergeron appellation has best to offer. If "Les Filles" offers more roundness and indulgentise, "Les Fripons" will delight lovers of straight and mineral wines.

The guide to the best wines of France, produced by RVF, also regularly lists the estate among the essential references of Savoy. The quality here remains consistent and each cuvée reflects the soul of the terroir and the winemaker's passion.
