History of the Coteaux Bourguignons designation

The Coteaux Bourguignons appellation is relatively recent in the Burgundy wine landscape. It was officially created in 2011, although it had in fact already existed under the name Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire since 1937. Before this change of name, the red and white wines produced in this category were often considered as simple "table wines" or generic Burgundies, less valued and associated with high yields and variable quality.

Unlike the "village" or Premier Cru appellations, Coteaux Bourguignons allows the production of wines on almost all soils in Burgundy, from the north to the south of the region. In practice, all terroirs located on plots not classified as village or Premier Cru appellation can produce Coteaux Bourguignons. The appellation therefore makes it possible to highlight a variety of soils (clay, limestone, stony) and different exposures.

The objective behind the creation of the Coteaux Bourguignons AOC was actually twofold: on the one hand, modernize the image of these accessible wines while clearly linking them to the prestigious Burgundy region; on the other hand, to offer winemakers a more flexible framework for producing red, white, and rosé wines from Burgundy’s traditional grape varieties (Pinot Noir, Gamay, Chardonnay, Aligoté) without having to use the more restrictive village or Premier Cru appellations.

This appellation thus makes it possible to enhance the value of less renowned terroirs, while guaranteeing a minimum level of quality and authenticity. It gives winemakers the opportunity to take advantage of the diversity of Burgundy’s soils and climates to offer authentic wines that are representative of their terroir.

In short, the Coteaux Bourguignons were created to restore prestige and clarity to the "simple" wines of Burgundy, while maintaining a connection with the region's winemaking history and tradition.

Styles of wines from the Coteaux Bourguignons AOC

The Coteaux Bourguignons AOC offers a range of supple and accessible wines, reflecting the diversity of the Burgundy terroir.

The red wine, mainly made from Pinot Noir and Gamay, is generally light to medium-bodied, offering supple tannins and pleasant freshness. The  Pinot Noir here produces elegant and subtle wines, with aromas of red fruits and sometimes floral or spicy notes, while Gamay produces fruitier and indulgents, easy-to-drink young wines.

The white wine of Coteaux Bourguignons is mainly made from  Chardonnay, sometimes from Aligoté, and is characterized by its freshness and liveliness. It is generally light to medium-bodied, offering aromas of white-fleshed fruits such as pear or apple, accompanied by floral or slightly mineral nuances depending on the terroir. This type of wine is highly appreciated for its balance and suppleness, allowing for immediate consumption while also being able to be kept for a few years.

Finally, rosés represent a smaller share of the appellation and are generally produced from Gamay or Pinot Noir. They are distinguished by their lively fruitiness, their lightness and their freshness, delivering on the palate notes of strawberry, raspberry, or redcurrant. These wines are intended to be consumed young, offering an easy and pleasant style for aperitifs or light meals.

Red, white, or rosé, the AOC Coteaux Bourguignons thus allows the production of wines representative of the Burgundy terroir in an accessible style and offers an ideal gateway to discover the diversity of the region's wines.
