Founded as a D.O (Denominación de Origen) in 1925, la Rioja has since 1991 achieved the status of DOca (Denominación de Origen Calificada), highest level in the hierarchy of Spanish appellations. The region has as its regional capital the city of Logroño and covers 60,000 hectares divided into 3 sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. The latter is located to the north/north-west of the city and is probably the area producing the finest and most elegant wines in the region. The Rioja Alta is located to the west of Logroño. These two areas enjoy a temperate climate influenced by the Atlantic Oceanand their vineyards are located between 500 and 800m in altitude, allowing more freshness to be expressed in the wines . Finally, the Rioja Baja is located to the east of Logroño and has a warmer and continental climate. The region's star grape variety is Tempranillo (70% of production), sometimes supplemented with Grenache noir as well as the Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano. There is also a small production of whites, notably with the varieties Viura, Malvesía and Grenache blanc. Anyway, La Rioja is the most popular Spanish wine region internationally thanks to its structured reds, long aging and often undergoing long aging in barrels.
