Key words: Power / Guard / Complexity

Wine: Château Montus is definitely one of the greatest wines from the South-West region. Composed of almost all of the local Tannat grape variety, here is a very long aging cru evolving with power and enjoying enormous aromatic complexity . Notes of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry, plum) mingle with tasty sweet spices (vanilla, pepper, cinnamon, garrigue, etc.) brought by a particularly noble woodiness. This 2017 vintage also already distills some notes of evolution on leather and humus. The tannins are powerful but ripe and will continue to settle down if you have the patience to let this superb bottle rest for a few more years in the cellar. A great wine to absolutely pair with red meats, game, duck, etc. !

The Estate: No introduction Alain Brumont! Iconic developer of the Madiran appellation, the latter has managed to hoist his properties to the top of the South-West region in 40 years and to highlight the incredible potential of the local Tannat grape variety.

It all started in 1979 when he inherited the 17 family hectares of Château Bouscassé. Then, in the early 1980s, he acquired Château Montus and met Baron Philippe de Rothschild at Château Mouton-Rothschild (Grand Cru Classé of the AOC Pauillac): it all clicked. Particularly inspired by their exchanges, he now clearly displayed his vision of wanting to produce great wines in Madiran, an appellation then mainly renowned for its rustic wines.

The first vintage of Château Montus in 1982 caused a stir: the press praised the work carried out while the French and foreign markets discovered a noble, powerful wine with certain aging potential. Since then, the man has continued to seek out and select the best terroirs in his native region. Today at the head of 250 hectares, Vignobles Brumont continues to be an absolute reference throughout the South West and Alain, although still invested, has now passed the reins of the house to his son-in-law Antoine Veiry. Go here to discover their magnificent cuvées, you won't regret it!
