DOCG Chianti is quite possibly the most internationally known and renowned Italian wine appellation. It is however necessary to distinguish this one, covering a large territory of 17,000 hectares spread over all of Tuscany and producing for the most part inexpensive wines with the DOCG Chianti Classico. Indeed, the latter covers a distinct area and represents a much more qualitative historic terroir of 7,000 hectares. You can easily recognize the wines produced in this area because, beyond the appellation that must be mentioned on the label, a logo representing un coq noir (or Gallo Nero in V.O ), is also affixed. Nevertheless, the two appellations also have points in common: their iconic grape variety is notably the illustrious Sangiovese, the latter having to represent at least 75 % of the composition of the wines, sometimes being supplemented by other varieties such as Canaiolo or Mammolo. Moreover, although the quality of the terroirs varies greatly between the two regions, the majority of the soils are clay-limestone.
