Created in 1937, The AOC Côtes-du-Rhône covers more than 30,700 hectares of vines between Vienne (south of Lyons) and Avignon. The latter is spread over 6 departments and 171 municipalities. Mainly renowned for its production of red wines (86%), the region also produces rosés (8%) and whites (6%). The climate here is strongly Mediterranean with hot, sunny days lulled by the mistral. Grenache is the dominant grape variety and is often accompanied by Syrah and Mourvèdre. On the white side, 80% of the grape varieties come from Grenache blanc, mainly supplemented by Clairette, Bourboulenc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. Several types of soil are present, between clay-limestone, rolled pebbles and sandy. Finally, AOC Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages highlights 95 municipalities (8,000 hectares), all located in the southern part of the vineyard, offering more qualitative terroirs. Of these 95 villages, 38 of them can even be mentioned in addition to the appellation on the bottle. This last appellation produces 98% of red wines.
