Summary
History and origins of the Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard
The first traces of viticulture in the Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard appear over 2,000 years ago around the famous rocks of Solutré and Vergisson, two emblematic sites of the region.
During this period, the Romans introduced and cultivated the vine thanks to a favorable climate and limestone soils conducive to viticulture. Consumption was then mainly local, but also sometimes intended for export to other regions of the Roman Empire. However, viticulture was not yet truly developed as a commercial activity.
In the Middle Ages, thanks to the thriving wine trade via the Saône, everything accelerated. At that time, the monks of the Abbey of Cluny as well as those from the Abbey of Cîteaux, further north, played a key role in the development of the vineyard. Their influence thus extended over the entire region, and the reputation of Pouilly-Fuissé wines began to take root.
At that time, the reputation of Mâconnais wines was less prestigious than that of the wines from Côtes de Nuits or Beaune (as is still the case today), but viticulture was nonetheless well established and the local vintages appreciated.
During the Renaissance, the demand for wine grew, and the Mâconnais vintages began to circulate more widely in France and Europe. Winemaking techniques gradually evolved, and the interest of aristocrats and bourgeois in Burgundy wine led to an increase in production as well as an improvement in quality. However, the reputation of Pouilly-Fuissé wines was not yet distinct, and Mâconnais wines remained in the shadow of the great vintages located further north.
For a long time, the vineyard was mostly planted with Gamay, a grape variety that is now the star of Beaujolais. It was only at the end of the 19th century, after the devastation caused by phylloxera, that Chardonnay became the dominant grape variety. This change marked a decisive turning point in the profile of the regional wines.
In 1936, the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation was officially created, clearly and legally defining the vineyard as well as the type of wines that can be produced there.
But the story doesn't end there ! In 2020, after 12 years of collective efforts by local winemakers with the INAO (National Institute of Origin and Quality), Pouilly-Fuissé finally sees the recognition of its Premiers Crus. 22 climates considered the best terroirs of the vineyard are thus distinguished. Among these plots are names like " Vers Cras ", " Pouilly ", and " Les Perrières ".
Today, the appellation extends over 4 communes (Solutré-Pouilly, Fuissé, Vergisson, and Chaintré) and covers a little more than 750 hectares, of which one quarter is elevated to Premier Cru status.

Climate and soils of the AOC Pouilly-Fuissé
The Pouilly-Fuissé vineyard benefits from a temperate climate with a slight continental tendency. This means cold winters and hot summers, perfect for viticulture. Rainfall is also relatively regular (around 800 mm per year). This climate allows for a gradual ripening of the grapes, thus preserving the natural acidity of the Chardonnay.
Regarding the soils, they are predominantly clay-limestone, dating back to the Jurassic era, 150 to 180 million years ago. These rich and complex terroirs vary from one plot to another, ranging from clay marls to very stony soils, each bringing a well-defined typicity to the wines. Finally, the vineyard is located between 200m and 400m in altitude.

The wines of Pouilly-Fuissé
You will have understood, the Pouilly-Fuissé is a white wine made exclusively from the grape variety Chardonnay.
The Pouilly-Fuissé vintages generally display a color ranging from pale gold to deep gold, sometimes with slight green reflections. This elegant color heralds lively and fragrant wines that maintain a beautiful freshness.
On the nose and palate, there are fruity notes such as peach, pear, lemon, or grapefruit. Most of the wines are also aged in oak barrels and reveal a lovely roundness, a lot of indulgence, as well as nuances of vanilla, butter, hazelnut, and almond.
Depending on the location of the vineyards, the aromatic nuances can vary significantly. For example, the cuvées from the slopes of Chaintré are often more rich and full-bodied, offering a beautiful structure, while those from Vergisson reveal a more pronounced minerality as well as a certain liveliness on the palate.
Finally, the wines from the region generally demonstrate a great aging potential. While the "village" cuvées are generally enjoyed in their youth and ideally up to 5-8 years, quality Premier Crus can be kept for a good ten years without hesitation.
