The iconic red grape varieties of Puglia

The Salento, in the heart of Puglia, Italy, is the birthplace of two red grape varieties that symbolize the richness and wine identity of the region: Primitivo and Negroamaro.

Primitivo, particularly renowned in the DOP area of Manduria, is characterized by its aromatic intensity, its ripe red fruit notes, and its warm spices. It produces generous and expressive wines, perfectly suited to the warm and sunny climate of Puglia, offering both roundness, fullness, and indulgentise.

The Negroamaro, for its part, brings structure and depth with firm tannins and intense aromas of black fruits, cocoa, and spices. Often used in blends with Primitivo or vinified on its own, it gives the region's bottles complexity and elegance, while enhancing their aging potential.

Other varieties complete this local palette, notably Nero di Troia, producing elegant wines with fine tannins and aromas of red and black fruits, as well as Montepulciano, mainly found in the north of Puglia, offering robust, rich reds with notes of black fruits and licorice. We can also mention Susumaniello, ancient and rare, producing intense, spicy, and deeply colored cuvées.

Together, all these grape varieties reflect the diversity and richness of the Apulian terroirs, enhanced by the expertise of local winemakers.

DOC or DOP, IGP or IGT: understanding Italian wine classifications

The Italian classification system can sometimes seem complex, but it is based on precise rules that guarantee the quality and origin of the wines.

The DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) and DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) correspond to the strictest classifications. They precisely define the geographical areas, authorized grape varieties, yields, and winemaking methods. These cuvées faithfully reflect the terroir and local tradition, and the DOCG label is considered the most prestigious. In France, DOC and DOCG can be compared to AOC (or AOP).

The IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica), equivalent to the French IGP, offer greater freedom to winemakers. These wines must always come from a specific region, but the rules regarding grape varieties or winemaking techniques are more flexible. This allows for the creation of modern or experimental wines, while maintaining a precise geographical identity.

Finally, wines labeled Vino da Tavola correspond to even freer productions, often intended for quick consumption or experimentation.

Understanding these classifications allows you to choose your Italian wines more easily, according to their style, complexity, and aging potential. So, whether you opt for a Primitivo di Manduria DOC or an IGT Puglia, you will now know what each bottle represents.

The Feudi di San Marzano range

Feudi di San Marzano embodies the spirit of Puglia and southern Italy, through a wide selection of Italian wines that combine authenticity and modernity. The house highlights the emblematic varieties of Salento such as the Primitivo grape, Negroamaro, and Susumaniello, offering a complete range of generous reds and aromatic whites. Each bottle here expresses the unique terroir of Manduria and demonstrates the Italian expertise in quality wine-making.

The red wines hold a central place in the production of Feudi di San Marzano. There are both very affordable, supple and fruity cuvées, as well as more powerful and complex wines from old vines of Primitivo di Manduria. This flagship grape variety gives rise to elegant and deep reds, true emblems of the region. Negroamaro captivates with its aromatic intensity, while Susumaniello stands out for its unique elegance. This diversity allows us to meet all preferences, from lovers of light Italian wines to enthusiasts of great age-worthy reds.

Nevertheless, the Feudi di San Marzano estate is of course not limited to just red wine! The estate also offers white wines such as Edda Bianco, a fresh and refined Italian wine, perfect for pairing with seafood. This selection demonstrates Feudi di San Marzano's commitment to offering a variety of wines that always remain true to the richness of the Apulian terroir.

Among this range, the Primitivo I Tratturi rosso holds a special place. Accessible and indulgent, this Italian red wine reveals notes of plum and cherry enhanced by a touch of spice. Its smoothness and versatility make it an ideal choice as an aperitif or at the table.
