The Prosecco DOC is a renowned Italian appellation shared between the regions of Friuli and Veneto, both located in the northeast of Italy. Covering more than 26,000 hectares with a single grape variety (Glera), this DOC is at the base of the region’s hierarchical pyramid. It is, in fact, the equivalent of a French regional AOC and allows the production of the famous sparkling wine in over 550 municipalities. At higher levels, there are the Prosecco Treviso DOC (95 municipalities), the DOCG Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore (only 15 municipalities), and finally the DOCG Prosecco Cartizze, representing the highest classification level and covering only 107 hectares.Moreover, there are several types of Prosecco: Spumante, Frizzanteand Tranquillo. Prosecco Spumante is a sparkling wine with classic effervescence, while Prosecco Frizzante features finer, lighter bubbles. Finally, there are even still Proseccos, known as Tranquillo, which contain no bubbles at all!
