History of the AOC Madiran

The history of the AOC Madiran is a fascinating journey dating back over 2000 years, a time when the Romans introduced vine cultivation to the region. However, it was only from the Middle Ages that Madiran truly began to make a name for itself…

In the 8th century, the Benedictine monks arrived in the region and founded several monasteries, bringing with them agricultural and viticultural knowledge. The monastery of Saint-Mont, located not far from Madiran, was  at the time one of the most important establishments.

Thanks to their dedication and meticulous expertise, the Madiran gradually becomes a highly sought-after sacramental wine, particularly appreciated by the pilgrims of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle on their way to their sacred destination. The reputation of Madiran then quickly spreads during the following centuries and a flourishing trade is established in the Pyrenean valleys and beyond.

In the 17th century, the Madiran vineyard experiences a period of growth and increased recognition. Madiran wines then become increasingly appreciated for their quality and good aging potential.

In the 18th century, the local wine begins to gain recognition beyond French borders, particularly in England. The reputation of regional cuvées is strengthened thanks to trade exchanges and growing demand.

At the end of the 19th century, the Madiran vineyard was almost entirely destroyed by the phylloxera invasion. Nevertheless, in the decades following the crisis, the resilient local winemakers embarked on a monumental task: replanting and selecting the best terroirs to revive the vine.

In 1948, the Madiran Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) was officially created, thus recognizing the quality and origin of the wines produced in the region. The AOC then set production and quality standards for local wines.

Since the creation of the AOC, the reputation of Madiran wines continues to assert itself. These are still renowned for their robustness as well as their excellent aging potential. You will have understood, the Madiran vineyard has a long and complex history, marked by periods of prosperity, challenges, and renewal. From its ancient beginnings to its modern recognition as an AOC, Madiran continues to play an important role in the viticulture of the Southwest of France. Climates and Soils The Madiran vineyard benefits from an oceanic climate as well as a unique environment, between sea and mountains. The annual rainfall is quite significant, ranging between 900mm and 1000mm per year, fairly well distributed throughout the year.

Moving away from the coast, the region also experiences a continental influence, with sometimes hot summers and more pronounced temperature variations between day and night, promoting a gradual ripening of the grapes.

Finally, the proximity of the Pyrenees also plays an important role. The mountains protect the region from cold winds coming from the north and east, while providing a certain freshness, helping to regulate the temperature, especially during the summer.

The  vineyard terroirs here are as varied as the climate. On the heights of the hills, the siliceous soils with large rolled pebbles promote good drainage, essential for the vine. The hillsides, with their clay-limestone soils, offer a sufficient water reserve to nourish the vines during drier periods. Finally, the lower slopes are composed of loamy-clay soils, retaining surface moisture but can  be drier in depth

The wines of the AOC Madiran

You have understood, the AOC Madiran is synonymous with  powerful red wines, full-bodied and endowed with a strong personality.

The Tannat grape variety is the true star of the appellation and must represent at least 60% of the blend of the wines. 100% Tannat cuvées are also permitted.

The variety is renowned for its dark color, generous tannins as well as its ability to produce great  age-worthy wines. The grape indeed imparts a robust structure, high acidity as well as intense aromas of dark fruits and spices to the local wines. As it ages, flavors of tobacco, leather, and humus emerge.

Other minor varieties can complement the wines, such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Fer Servadou.
